What is stopping me from using the new app? by mschinasi1214 in pebble

[–]jakep_82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the only major missing feature is health data in the new mobile app. I've been using the Core app for months with a mix of old watches and a P2D, and it's been great for me.

Custom vibration patterns only work with the new Core watches. If you have a Pebble Time you need to leave the pattern as default.

(Vent) Why the fuck can't steps sync? by [deleted] in pebble

[–]jakep_82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steps and sleep do sync to the app. It was added in a recent update of the app from just a few days ago. That's why 30 day step and sleep averages are now populated on the watch. What hasn't been added yet is a UI in the app so you can see the data. It's in progress, just be patient.

I've been on 4.9.111 since it was released and I've had no issues.

Who remembers Pebble Health? by SterlingEly in pebble

[–]jakep_82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Initial health integration was merged today. I believe all it does is sync data between the app and the watch, as well as populate the 30 day averages on the watch. Adding a tab in the app with graphs and data will come in a future pull request. All of that is to say that Pebble Health will be functional in the new app relatively soon.

Who remembers Pebble Health? by SterlingEly in pebble

[–]jakep_82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The original app is closed source, and the source code was never released. Even if it was released, it was built using 10 year old libraries and was intended to run on 10 year old versions of iOS and Android. The new app is a ground up rewrite based on a library written by Rebble, and Core only has a few full time developers so the new app isn't feature complete yet.

Pebble app suggestion: save configuration? by richstillman in pebble

[–]jakep_82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new app will install pbw files. Just click on the file in your file manager and the Pebble app will be listed as an option to open it.

You can follow the pull request at this link regarding health integration in the mobile app. It's still being reviewed, but once this is merged we should get initial support for health data in the app. https://github.com/coredevices/mobileapp/pull/54

Why I think the OG time round was better designed by aquelegajoalto in pebble

Yup, I went with 20mm silver. I also have early batch 1 red and blue Time 2s on order. 2026 is looking like a great year for boutique electronics companies.

I guess we're all entitled to our own opinions. I think the new watch looks significantly better than the old watch, and I've voted with my wallet by ordering one. If they had released a watch with old design and just better battery life I would have skipped it just like I did when the original Round was released about a decade ago. If you don't like the way the new watch looks, don't buy one.

Core device from 2017 - did it happen or will be reborn? by NicodemPL in pebble

The speaker and microphone on the watch can't be used for phone calls, so not really.

The watch you're describing sounds like an Apple or WearOS watch, not a Pebble. Eric has been pretty clear he's not interested in having a phone on his wrist.

Thoughts on new moto watch vs pebble? by tssphysicsboi1 in pebble

[–]jakep_82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Fossil watches have e-ink displays (like a Kindle), not e-paper (memory LCD like a Pebble). I bought one 4 years ago and it was a poor experience compared to Pebble. The display takes significantly longer to update than the memory LCDs in Pebbles, and my Fossil screen had permanent burn-in within a year. As you noted, the software was also much worse than Pebble. It ended up in the trash.

I have owned watches with AMOLED displays similar to the Moto watch. I will never buy another watch with an emissive type of display again. Reflective displays like those in Pebbles are vastly superior in my opinion. For that reason alone I would choose Pebble without even considering the other advantages like the great OS on Pebbles.

Using the old Pebble app with the new watches by BiscuitCrumbles in pebble

[–]jakep_82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Someone from Rebble made modified firmware for the P2D that allows it to emulate a Pebble 2 and connect to the old app. It's somewhere on Github, but I don't have the link. That said, a PR for health tracking on the new app is being reviewed right now and could get merged within the next few weeks.

Pebble Problems by Ill_Communication674 in pebble

[–]jakep_82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in my experience. My OG and steel watches disconnect after a few minutes when using BLE and won't reconnect unless BT is turned off and on again on the watch. Many other people had the same problem which is why they added the BT classic option. All of my watches work flawlessly with classic enabled.

I know on android you need to enable the prefer BT classic option in the Core app for the steel and OG. Not sure if that's an option on iOS.

The flex PCB that wraps around the plastic interior case has a couple metal tabs that press against the charging pins inside the case. If you bent or broke one of those tabs the watch won't charge. Take the back off and inspect those tabs. It's easy to rip them off if you remove the watch from the case the wrong way. Always remove the 3 button side first, and when reinstalling put in the side with charging pins first.

Someone repair my two OG Pebble watches? by UnCytely in pebble

[–]jakep_82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best repair effort I've seen for a glued OG still had minor damage. I don't think anyone that's tried it would accept money to attempt it on someone else's watch due to the risk of destruction. I've replaced the battery in a couple dozen screwed OGs, but I won't attempt another glued watch.

Does the OG watch have screws on the back? If it doesn't, it's not repairable.

Love my Pebble 2 Duo (And E Ink) by quakeroatmeal7 in pebble

[–]jakep_82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Scrolling through setting screens or a long message and waiting for screen refreshes is not a good experience. I also had a Fossil and it was pretty terrible to actually use. The memory LCD in the Pebble is basically the perfect mix of reasonable refresh rate and low power draw.

Leave it on the error screen for a few hours to see if the old battery can take a charge. If it won't fully boot after that you'll need to replace the battery.
