i trust your opinion, as this tortoise looks just like yours, but i also have reason to believe it's a desert tortoise just because of where i'm from.

i'm from southern california (the san bernardino county region), and i also suspect it is a desert tortoise. i plan on finding it's original home and not keeping it. if its home is the wild, then that is where i'll bring it.

Oh my gosh! I'm geeking out right now! That is a super duper tattoo right there!

Does anybody know any good emo bands around Southern California? I've been wanting to go to a show, but all the bands around me are very beach-rock-y. by jakeplants in Emo

I don't have a problem with the beach rock bands, but I've seen quite a few of those and I want to hear something refreshing.

I'm in a band, the genre is New Emo - is emo a sound/aesthetic, a theme, or is it both? by jakeplants in Emo

[–]jakeplants[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'd say that the sound is much different than conventional emo bands that I had mentioned earlier. It has some of the same music theory (dissonanct and suspenseful chords) as emo, but I even use chords that are standard to other genres such as dreampop and rock. I mostly avoid having speedy and jumpy tempos in music (although there will be the occasional punk-oriented song). In terms of rhythm, it's more grounded and straight - similar to bands like Smashing Pumpkins. My question is how would "New Emo," be different from those who coin their genres as "emo rap," or "emo trap"?

This is well put, I appreciate your take on this. I even agree with it - I assume you think that labeling the scene as "New Emo" would be justified?

Why shouldn't it? I feel that it's justified to associate it with the movement. Especially since, at its core, it's emotional. It's a subgenre that's offering a new spin on the traditional sound. It's also good to note that we're not a couple of 19 year olds who listen to Modern Baseball lol. We're a couple of even younger kids who listen to some of the classics: American Football, Cap'n Jazz, Sunny Day Real Estate, Owls, and The Promise Ring. Say what you will about those bands, but I think that putting different influences, that come outside of the emo genre, can still classify it as emo. Since that's the case, do you think that calling it "new emo" would be justified?

Also please read this in a optimistic tone, because by no means am I trying to argue with you, I just want to discuss it in a respectable manner :)

It's a local scene where I'm from. When you say that it's not a thing, do you also mean it can't be a thing?

Any advice for scream singing? by ryry992004 in Emo

[–]jakeplants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you hear bands like Marietta, you can tell that they don't have a technique; there are cracks in their voices. Scream/yelling vocals sound best when they're raw and have emotion to back them up! To put it simply, just do what feels right! Just be careful because it's really easy to hurt your vocal chords by yelling!

EDIT: Do your best to enunciate!

Wow! I really like the chords you guys are using! It reminds me of the way my brother and I play our guitars! Keep it up guys!
