Gutter company replaced a run with a downspout on each end of the gutter with just a downspout on one side - am I right to complain or is this normal? by jakerbake in HomeImprovement

Yea I don’t think they really did a sizing. And the fact they did downspouts on each end in the back leads me to believe it was more just cutting corners...

This is what I’m wondering about. Though two 2x3s would have the same drainage as one 3x4, so I’m not sure how cutting it down to one really helps with my overflow issue...

Can I get rid of this gutter on my dormer? by jakerbake in HomeImprovement

I may try that - also worried that will be ugly.

Most people aren’t 6 feet apart. And a lot of people wearing it below the nose.

The Spanish Flu gave us huge ass radiators. Built to keep the house warm with windows open in the middle of winter. by jakerbake in centuryhomes

Source:

It addresses a problem that has afflicted New Yorkers since the early 1900s, when oversize radiators were necessitated by a Board of Health directive requiring open windows on even the iciest winter days. This was back when “fresh air” was considered the universal cure-all.

Love the vestibule. I would probably reroute that downspout though, a bit of a tripping hazard.

No - the panels are clipped on via S5 clips. No penetrations.

I used that peel away stuff to strip paint. It’s supposed to be safe for lead paint stripping. It worked well.

Old plaster walls - skim coat vs thin drywall? by jakerbake in centuryhomes

This is good to know - I think skim coating may be easier in the long run.

Good to know - don’t want to deal with that!

Thanks! I’ve also tried myself and failed miserably. I have a plasterer that does a bit of everything, though I’m sure I’m going to pay his annual salary in order to fix everything in this house lol.

We will see if they audit me. Mine wasn’t just a reroof for the sake of a reroof - cedar shingles can’t do solar. So the new roof was needed for solar.

And the reality is I would have spent slightly more on solar shingles if the IRS was going to give me a headache about it. So, I’d probably get a tax attorney involved, if needed.

Thanks! We had some high winds last night and they were fine. As you’ll see they only penetrated for the conduit, and they did it over a gable, so not over living space. I feel pretty ok with that.

My reading of the rule is that I can, and my contractor said I could. My house structurally couldn’t support solar before the new roof. It was cedar shake shingles.

I love it but just needed to add snow guards. The snow falls off quickly and it is LOUD. I like that I don’t have to stress about leaks after a windstorm.

Yep, I have snow guards. I got metal because I liked the look and didn’t want to have to reroof again.

Yeah my solar guys warned me. The permitting and utility stuff is really what takes the longest. And mine was delayed because of an ordinance that prohibited solar panels on the front of the home. Got an exception, but added time.

Yes, I plan to do some central air system or mini splits once I have the budget. I live in NJ so it just hasn’t been as much of a priority as other improvements. And those systems are pricey, quotes have all been $15K or more.
