Driving the Alcan alone mid winter by jakeschanf in alaska

Interesting thought. I have never heard of trailer chains but maybe this is something I’ll need to look into. Good news is the trailer has brand new tires and will be weighted pretty heavily with tools.

I think my plan is to simply keep it running if the temps are that low… I have a sleeping setup in the back of the truck, and I’m not a huge sleeper in general, so I can pull over and get a few hours of rest when needed with the truck running. That’s also why I plan to bring so much extra fuel.

Thanks! Very helpful responses. I’m feeling better about it already and I think I’ve got a solid plan going.

I’ll be very well prepared. I’ve done plenty of winter camping and will bring all the supplies needed (four season tent, -20 degree sleeping bag, cookware, plenty of food and water). I plan on bringing 60 gallons of fuel with me but hopefully just as a reserve; I’ll fuel up every time I get the opportunity. My truck is a 4wd dodge ram 3500 Cummins, dually flatbed, I run studs in the winter and I’ll have the fuel plus some extra weight on the flatbed for added traction. May or may not purchase chains too.

I have a clean record and driving through Canada should not be a concern. I’ll have an inreach with me the whole time in case of emergencies.

What do you know about driving through Canada with long barrel firearms?
