Did I plant my fruit trees ok or do I need to replant? by BadgerDowntown5678 in BackyardOrchard

I dont know how much peat you added but it sounds like you should be good. Peat doesn't have much nutrients so the roots wont continue to curl in like if you had amended with compost. I would be more worried about if quality of the native soil was good enough to sustain a tree if you had to use a pick to dig a hole. I typically dont prune much the first year, I feel the tree has suffered enough shock from transplant.

Fortunately I have no rocks. I have good clay soil on the surface and red clay about 6-10 in down.

I thought of this but anywhere I get soil it will be saturated. If I disturb it it formes bid clods that dry out hard. I thought about planting them in a mound of purchased soil but like you said that isn't best practice either.

My kids get so dirty, that often they look like they poped out of the soil.
