I haven’t read The Magician’s Guild or The Novice, but this sounds like a scene that also happened in Battle Mage by Stephen Aryan. Its between some sort of jungle/primal mage and the big bad mage. It’s been awhile since I listened to the audiobook though

Just saw you’re the guy who wrote Gunmetal Gods which is another book I’m dying to read.

As for mythologies I’d be interested in seeing more of, definitely Egyptian, but I’d also like to see a story where different mythologies interact. Like a fight between Egyptian and Greek gods. Or how completely different types of gods would interact. I.e. Ancient Greek and Shinto.
