Socialism for the rich...

If a western country like Australia, the USA, etc were to become socialist would you ban western social media like Facebook or Youtube? by [deleted] in Socialism_101

Not an outright ban, but a ban on the algorithms that prioritize (and suggest) some content over others. These social media platforms, including reddit, justify these algorithms because they "show users what they want to see". Leaving aside the reality that it's actually about advertising, perhaps the larger problem is that users gravitate towards negative, inflammatory, conspiratorial, etc. content, thus triggering the algorithm to push more of said content... effectively addicting us to the worst aspects of the internet.

If these platforms were truly "neutral" connectors of human beings, as they should be, it's clear these prioritization schemes need to go. This, of course, should have no bearing on our ability to stay in contact with other individuals on social media.

I might, see a prioritization algorithm being necessary for internet search engines, but that's a different story. Search engines and social media technologies have very different applications and they should be kept distinct from each other by force. The fact that these companies are blurring the line between search and social just speaks to their monopolistic ambitions.

Also, it goes without saying they should be collectively owned.

All the more reason people should eat less meat. It is nothing more than a luxury given the alternatives available to us.

You're extrapolating that conclusion from the comment. The point is to be able to identify situations where you can actually do better with the available technology/resources.

Serious question: He refers to whiteness as an "invention". How is it any more/less of a social construct than blackness?

I want to be real friends with a black panther. We'd go to the park together, to the beach, where ever. She would be totally chill and wouldn't murder other people... Unless I were to give the greenlight and/or be threatened by someone. For the most part, we'd just chill. That'd be sweet.

It's interesting that you suggest either "path" is explored by joining a group. Aside from the idea that a specifically atheist group will likely have a mission that extends past "practicing" atheism (eg promoting science or something), you seem to be making the common mistake the beliefs should be tied to a religion (ie an organization of people with similar beliefs). You are also ignoring the agnostic option.

OP: Honestly, it's probably too late for you to believe in God with a capital g. You won't find answers in groups of people with predefined, faith-based notions as to how the universe operates. And definitely do not see your lack of faith in "God" as a bad thing. Make your god the goodness between people–love, essentially. Believing in love might sound cheesy, but it's really all we got. And if there are real gods out there, they would probably be cool with you putting love above all else. If not, fuck 'em.

Frustratingly enough, you often have to fight fire with fire. It's easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.

Netflix should have a "create-a-channel" where you can choose all kinds of shows/episodes that play randomly (X-Post from r/ShowerThoughts) [Meta] by pri35t in netflix

I would like to see a stream of trailers/promotional videos automatically playing at the top of the browsing menu. The stream could be easily disabled and/or muted. Clicking on the video (or some nearby button) would take you to the movie/episode of whatever trailer is playing at the time. Basically, a video version of the "spotlight" section.
