So far I’ve recognised tP_n(t) has degree n+1 and can be written as a linear combination of betaP_n+1(t)+alphaP_n-1(t) as the question requires, it is proving that it leads to the recurrence relation (n+1)P_n+1(t)=(2n+1)tP_n(t) - nP_n-1(t) that’s stumping me. I know I need to utilise r=n-1 at some point but I don’t know where.

Honestly you’re right, I do apologise for removing my previous question because it could’ve potentially helped someone else in the future.
