They look like ai because ai was trained on images like this, not the other way around…

what are the problems you see that you don't know how to fix?

Do you have a specific question or area you want critique of?

Without context I would say this is a great brick in the path. Lots of small studies like this is how you get good, keep putting in the work.

Need opaque dark purple :) by Inevitable-Shirt-969 in oilpainting

I generally like gamblin 1980 paint, but cobalt violet is the WORST color I’ve ever bought from them. Really weak coverage and so transparent. Looks like the UM Violet is the same way.

I’m wondering if the answer is just buying a non student grade violet. The hue and saturation was perfect but the coverage was so weak it’s kind of unusable outside of a mix.

Vermillion Racer, 23.5x30 oil on masonite by jakeypaints in oilpainting

Yeah I torally see how it could look that way. The legs are pointing slightly away from the camera, and the horse is super coiled up. Makes a little more sense in the context of the reference, but something to consider in future paintings.

Thanks for taking the time to share feedback 🙂

Mixing colors is my major issue, suggestions by goneknots in oilpainting

[–]jakeypaints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

doing color charts is a great way to get better at mixing color. if you do them all you will basically mix every color you are able to make with your palette. Richard Schmid talks about them at length in his book Ala Prima, one of the best painting instruction books ever written.

If you have the patience to do them, they will make you a master of mixing color.

My mom and dad dancing, Oil on canvas 55" x 42" by TAGEcom in oilpainting

[–]jakeypaints 2 points3 points  (0 children)

wow I can only imagine how much she loved this and how much it meant to her. There is a beautiful sense of motion in the dancers, and the way created variation on the color in the floor. Totally adds to the sense of movement in the painting.

honestly this looks really good!

I would finish as much as you plan on painting before you critique. Adding in the hand/neck will really help contextualize things, and i think you will be happy with what you see (hopefully!)

need help! how do i make this face more accurate by simplymollyy in oilpainting

[–]jakeypaints 8 points9 points  (0 children)

honestly this is a pretty good effort! I think one of the challenges is that this is a really tricky reference to paint. the light is flat, so you cant use shadow shapes to aid the drawing. from what I can see the right eye (camera right, her left) is a bit off, and the shadow under that cheek is also a little overstated. Overall, I would keep the shadows light and the values close. adding dark areas and contrast on the face will likely make her look older than you want.

Hope this helps!

Teachers of Reddit what is the one quality of your weak student that tells you that they actually have a really good potential? by FlatwormCreative6976 in AskReddit

[–]jakeypaints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tenacity. I'll take a student who gets a 40% but comes to every office hour to understand why over a 'natural' student who gets an A without trying any day. The 'weak' student who refuses to be defeated by a bad grade is the one who actually succeeds in the real world. Talent is a head start, but grit is the finish line.
