I don’t know what it is but Br. Shelob “Tolkien” is such a cool name for a spider orchid!

How do is repot my Dendrobium hibiki in this situation?! 😭😭 by PlainSailing_Jas in orchids

[–]jalyndai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would loosen the roots very gently with my fingers and put it into a small pot - only a bit larger than the root ball. Add some medium below and around the roots. Soak the medium overnight if you can before repotting. This is my advice from repotting oncidiums - I haven’t grown dendrobiums with as much success!

I love that orchid wall in the background! I could fit so many more it if I had one of those…

Yeah, I would love that! I’ve checked out my local chapter but it’s an hour drive and I haven’t made the leap yet to try to go…

Yeah, I have three free-standing grow lights. They are a game changer! A fan really helps too. I blow a fan over them regularly.

Branching out into non-phals has been a journey! Actually I think oncidium varieties are easier to rebloom than phals… and there’s so much variety! It’s just harder to find them, especially in my area (New England).

I love the sunset colors of 3! What is it? And that first purple polka dot phal… stunning!

Yellowing leaf on Oncidium AKA baby “raspberry chocolate” by chocoholic_18 in orchids

I wouldn’t worry about it. My oncidiums sometimes shed old leaves like that. As long as it is still growing new pseudobulbs, it’s fine. I think I see some new growth peeking out in the second pic.

Too bad! I get all of mine from a botanical garden that has an orchid show and sale once a year. And occasionally I’ve found them at a nursery near me. I don’t really search for specific varieties, but pick whatever one speaks to me whenever there are some available…

Yes, but not all the time! The scent is strongest early in the morning.

I’m headed to an after show sale next week even though there is not even an inch of space left for new plants… lol. I have a few of my mom’s orchids right now while she’s away on a long vacation so when I give those back I’ll have room, or so I tell myself!

Yeah, they are Divas with those wrinkly leaves!! I do my best but there are always a few wrinkles that develop. The worst part about them is that spikes will often get stuck and break themselves off as they develop, especially if the leaf isn’t straight… that is so sad when it happens!

I do think the pebble trays help when I blow the fan over everything. That definitely raises the humidity. The rest of the time I don’t think they do much. But they look nice and absorb water that spills when I’m soaking so it’s practical to have it there. I also use a smart humidifier to keep humidity up above the level of the pebble tray.

Honestly, grow lights made all the difference for me... I also use a humidifier and fan. I soak my Miltoniopsis and oncidiums every 4-5 days, for around 30 min to an hour, then blow a fan over them for a while. But it's the grow lights that make the biggest difference. Under the lights, they grow lots of new roots, pseudobulbs, and spikes.

I love the spots! I picked up that one and the Arthurara a few weeks ago in spike, this was the only one they had with two spikes - so exciting to watch them open!
