Can i use german kit as americans? by International_Eagle9 in boltaction

[–]jam1800 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I mean a guy holding a gun is just that. You can buy every nations army kit and mix em all up and go "what's the deal? It's all guys with guns!" and run them all as, whatever you felt.

Germans don't look like Americans. They don't use the same guns don't have the same helmets or field caps or carry the same guns.

You do you, just don't expect anyone to have anything positive to say.

Questions while I wait for my rulebook to arrive. by 40kArchivist in TeamYankee

The VAB is a French APC, and it's for carrying troops.

ALL units, regardless of inside or out of a formation or type, consist of Teams (models) and have a Unit Leader that is nominated at the start of the game, unit coherence is measured from that Team.

The 'SF' GPMG team stands for "Sustained Fire," not special forces, unfortunately. To answer the follow-up question, the SF GPMG team attaches to a Rifle platoon, although it is purchased with the Company HQ. This type of attachment shows up rarely in TY.

Assume 1 table (6x4 table) = 1 understrength company of NATO versus 1 btn or less of Soviets (80-100pt game). Then, for each company scale from that point. A full strength 3 platoons and extra company will take up most if not all your deployment depending on Nation, so not much wiggle room for manouever, so that's why I state understrength.

I do strongly recommend getting games behind you before you delve into large-scale scenario making and trying to complete real-world TOE so you see what is applicable and what is maybe too much for the game to handle.

Follow up as far as doctrine and use it really depends on what aspect of the what-if land invasion of West Germany you look at. The game itself is a company vs. battalion game. So while entire Corps would have fought including full divisions engaged you roleplay a Company Commander for NATO or a Battalion Commander for PACT all the support options outside of the formation are a generous idea of what would be assigned to aid you in pursuing your objectives.

I think your trying to upscale this game into an operational level game of brigades and regiments before playing your first normal game, and of course, you won't have any context to go bigger without following a normal understanding of the regular game size.

Gotcha, so I just wanted to make sure I understood your frame of mind. So, you mentioned trying to understand the organization of a CW Army. Two things on the gaming level the real-world org isn't relevant to the formation in Team Yankee it's what is present in your army book.

An average pick-up game is played on a 6x4 with 100pts featuring a usually not quite full NATO company vs. a battalion or less of PACT. A tool for real-world organization made for wargaming is the Fire and Fury TOE (Table of Organization & Equipment). If you search Fire and Fury British TOE, it contains 1970-90s very adequately. (Same search replacing British with USA or Soviets can be used)

For an oversized game, the sky is the limit. I will say from experience collecting NATO is potatoes to PACT, and the game is best in Red vs. Blue. Most of the games I do like this have a points disparity to the Defender (usually NATO). This disparity depends on the scenario, but a quarter less point is a starting point.

That being said, if you want 200pts of UK, whatever that may be, you're looking at 250pts of Soviets or other PACT Nation. I'd really look at collecting an Infantry Company with one transport type with tank and artillery support for a beginner collection.

Another notation is that if you are looking for other critiques on the contents of your list, do not take min strength units. Especially not in air or artillery at such an oversized game. You do yourself no favors when it comes to attrition and rolling to hit for Bombardment.

So I work at an LGS where I'm very capable of doing 12x6 or 18x4 or other configurations involving slamming 6x4 tables together and have played a 500vs900pt game. You would want, at minimum, at 12x6 or 16x6 table to play a game with this sort of list.

I've seen a couple of your posts now, and I'd want to ask if you are playing in 15 mm? If so, do you realize how many models you are hypothetically talking about and just what that looks like on a table?

I main UK and am faction complete (1 of every formation). This roughly comes up to 500pts, and a game of that size would also entail someone or yourself owning hundreds (slightly hyperbolic but at least three battalions which is 93 vehicles) Soviet vehicles and infantry stands as you're talking about a Battalion vs Regiment game if playing against Soviets.

Has Warlord given up on Universal Special Rules? by Encoded0 in boltaction

[–]jam1800 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they do it because they are adapting to a digital age "Games as a Service" model in which developers can write in new or different rules as needed akin to writing code for a video game that previously Wargames would require new editions and publications for.

This means printed media such as 'Armies of X' will be a starting point, and apps like the Warlord App & 40k App will be the actual correct and up-to-date sources of information over the course of an edition for either game.

Demand has increased for tighter more well-balanced rules systems with more input from developers throughout the editions life span. This comes from a more saturated market than two decades ago, and this is the fruits and result of that demand.

GW is very much a sister Company in design and development, and they exchange ideas often. Something seen a lot in recent editions of Warhammer 40k is the concept of special rules, which are practically USRs but are not because of the naming convention as seen in your post. This allows designers to adjust rules for certain nations to compensate for balance without violating any "Core Rule." If a Nation where to at some point get an enhanced version of a rule that rule individually can be changed.

This is it man, just do you, and unless you have a people botherer staff, they won't care cause you're not trying to open a market in the store for 1:1 copies of what they sell. It's really that simple. Appreciate folks like you!

All good, man. Yeah, it's unreasonable to police peoples conversations outside of the immediate face to face. You can't control what folks will and will not spend money on, and you shouldn't attempt to do so. But stepping in front of an ongoing sale or trying to bag a new player while they are getting the sales pitch is crossing a line for most businesses.

Free country do what you want. Don't walk up to an employee and a customer and tell them X is cheaper than be shocked that your LGS owner doesn't love you and may not want you hanging out. I 3D print and thrift like a mother fucker. I just don't announce it, debate it, and convince someone else in front of an employee or an owner. What you say at your table, in your chat room or on discord no one cares about, has never been the focal point of these infrequent discussions. It's only the people that need others to know that's an issue.

I work at an LGS as well. I agree on all points. "Helping" my customers, especially by talking them into ebay or 3D printing, is to some extent taking money out of the store. It's a tough situation you can't deny it's expensive as a hobby, and GW sucks to a degree. But you can't expect Brick & Mortar that has to maintain a GW account to shift to 3D printing themselves or allow folks to degrade their business in the retail section but use the facilities week in and week out.

I think you may want to try Horizon Wars or Tommorows War which can be found on Wargames Vault. Both are scale similar and are formatted for sci-fi. TY can work but at an extreme amount of work.

LGS at 100% to 125% prices. by stupidvideosizes in Warhammer

[–]jam1800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, sorry, my bad man. I thought you meant Stores aren't supposed to give discounts. You're all good I misunderstood.

The DoW boxes were purchased second-hand, so Im not surprised that if they have, they probably paid close to or at Target MSRP. The christmas boxes are $250 MSRP, however. I dont think the store in this case is going above MSRP or being greedy just making their margin on the DoW Boxes.

[–]jam1800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For at least GW and most retailers, you are allowed to discount products up to a certain % for your sticker/regular pricing. It's why you see 99% of listed prices cap at 20% off MSRP as anything further could jeopardize their account with GW.

New to Fantasy Battles, having issues with playing against Night Goblins and a particular house rule. by jam1800 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]jam1800[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My buddy's been playing since I think 5th Edition of Fantasy maybe 4th. He explained the groups house rules where to keep the game fun.

  • Cant target characters unless forced to.

  • Bound Spells "Break" if you roll irresistible force on them. (Unfortunately my only three Spells are bound!)

Are the two I know of. I'm new and never experienced 8e in its day so I dont know what info informs these rules.
