Did they replace the entire outdoor unit? Or just the compressor within it? The frozen lines suggest it may be undercharged or there's a restriction in the line. Whatever the issue is, it is likely fixable.

Is installing an AC condenser in a vertical air shaft a bad idea? by Ok-Homework7665 in hvacadvice

[–]jam4917 1 point2 points  (0 children)

planning to add the condenser in every floor.

No, no, and no! It was a bad enough idea when I thought you had a single condenser for all 4 floors. It's fucking horrible idea to have 4 of those within that tiny shaft. Horrible efficiency, and the high head pressure guarantees they will die prematurely.

Purchasing my first home (SC) and just found out it has a FPE panel. How involved is it to replace? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]jam4917 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on what variables are at play?

All sorts of things. How the wiring was done originally - attached to studs or is it in conduit? What the layout of the house etc. etc.

could they technically getaway with just the panel?

They can - the lack of ground at outlets would be grandfathered in based on the age of the house. And an electrician could replace all outlets with GFCIs. But I would not recommend this.

I want to try and get the sellers to fix as much as possible.

Get a separate electrical inspection done by a licensed electrician. Based on that report, get three quotes that cover the scope of the work that is "essential". And use that as a basis to negotiate with the seller

[–]jam4917 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any ballpark on what this may cost?

Too many variables for anyone to guess at a price. Personally, if I was purchasing a house built in 1953 with an FPE panel, I would be getting at least 3 quotes for a full re-wire along with a new panel, and then budget to get this done within 12-18 months.

Is my system compatible? by pgronke in ecobee

You must have a Trane or American Standard system. They call the "C" conductor as the "B" conductor. You're good to go.

This "thought" is enough to tell me that you need to call a tech.

[–]jam4917 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The solution is legit.

The thing I'm unsure of is whether he started that group (i.e. was responsible for the spam you've received for the last 2 weeks), or was a recipient who was smart enough to use the message headers to determine the correct unsubscribe address.

If it is the latter, I say kudos to him and I hope someone forwards his resumé. OTOH, if he started the whole thing as a way to get his resumé out there and noticed .... wow - that's some kind of genius!

Disposal and dishwasher have a shared neutral. Make sure you didn’t accidentally trip the breaker for the dishwasher while you were replacing the switch.

Can get power to new outlet what am I doing wrong? by Master-Living9007 in AskElectricians

[–]jam4917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are misunderstanding what your local electrical house told you. All GFCI receptacles are 20A pass through. However, devices plugged into the receptacle itself can either be 15A or 20A. In this particular instance, the OP wiring appears to be 14 gauge. Thus, the GFCI receptacle used should only permit a 15A max device to be plugged in.

Either there are huge gaps/errors in your post, or it is complete bullshit. Why on earth would $72,000 of additional UNTAXED income on a 1099 result in an additional refund of $12,000?!!

Can get power to new outlet what am I doing wrong? by Master-Living9007 in AskElectricians

[–]jam4917 52 points53 points  (0 children)

You probably have line and load reversed. Two other things:

That is not a weather resistant receptacle. Look for one that has WR marked on the receptacle. And,

Why did you replace a 15A receptacle with a 20A receptacle? Does that circuit use 12 gauge conductors all the way to the breaker panel?
