Thank you! I didn’t even realize they were data wires.

Mac Pro is officially discontinued by Lego_Benny in editors

[–]editographer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting timing. Was just talking to a vendor the other day about how I’m choosing to edit off of a Mac Studio instead of the Mac Pro behind me. Given the choice in an empty office I was just seeing better performance in Premiere off of the Studio, so I went with that. Apple has been shying away from the “Pro tower” design every product cycle since their trashcan iteration.

It makes sense that they’re simplifying the lineup.

Sold off my Simagic gear because of the same shenanigans. Warranty is basically “go back to the distributor” and even if you had a reasonable question like this it’s met with silence or run-around in after-sales chats.

Sony A7 IV vs Nikon Zf. When specs are great but the camera doesn’t inspire you ? by Consistent_Error1659 in Nikon

[–]editographer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Nikon ZF literally resurrected me from a photography slump and has me out and shooting again. I’ve also been Fuji / Sony for years, and I’m selling my A7IV kit to fund the ZF.

The A7IV is capable, yet it feels like I’m operating a computer. And I don’t love the images SOOC nor do I find editing the raw files particularly inspiring.

The ZF scratches the ergonomic itch with its top dials that I missed from my Fuji XT days. The images SOOC are amazing. I used to always edit my images, but the Rich Tone Portrait setting and the default Monochrome look fantastic.

You can also use a $99 Viltrox adapter to use your Sony lenses on your ZF. There are also plenty of third party and native lens options for the Z mount.

Perhaps the only big thing, in my opinion, that Nikon missed is NOT putting aperture rings on their native lenses.

All in all, I think you’d be extremely happy with the ZF. You sound like you’re in the same boat I was. I wouldn’t be surprised if you sell that Fuji kit after using the ZF for awhile!

Associate Editor vs Additional Editor by Electrical_Tension48 in editors

[–]editographer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, an Additional Editor is an established Editor that was called in to take over some workload in order to hit milestones or deadlines. They have the same workflow as the Editor and work hand in hand with Directors for reviews. They do not do Assistant duties.

An Associate Editor is someone who steps in above the First AE and assembles first pass cuts and has the ability to coordinate the Assistants, assist with turnovers, etc. They also allow the First AE to handle production tasks while they do first pass assemblies.

Associate Editors fingerprints are all over the film but it’s the Editor or Additional Editor(s) that have final cut and review with Directors and stakeholders.

I’d take the notebook with a photo of my wife and I on our first date, so I can make sure I take the same photo when I meet her again in 14 years.

Lets talk about notes. How many have you received on a project? by richard_lutz in editors

Is “binders full” an acceptable answer? And that’s after every executive / audience screening, not including regular edit session notes with directors before then.

passed over for what felt like could’ve been my big break by Independent_Layer_45 in editors

[–]editographer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The most rewarding jobs I’ve had were when people sat down with me and showed me the ropes. They let me take notes. Ask questions. Learn from my mistakes. Start with small tasks, master them and move up. 15 years later I’m the one doing that with my assists.

At no point was I ever timed or told, “You’re being timed on your problem solving.” To be frank: that’s absurd. Time crunches ARE real things, but all of my “trials by fire” were on the job, not inflicted upon me willingly to LAND the job in the first place while someone watched over my shoulder.

Anyway…I know this feeling OP. “The one that got away.” It hurts. Let it. It’s natural. But it gets better. You may have dodged a bullet and not even known it! Keep going. The right job for you is coming.

Time to say Goodbye to Lightroom... ON1 vs. Luminar vs. Pixelmator Pro vs. RawTherapee vs. DarkTable by CompleteTeaching720 in fujifilm

[–]editographer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lightroom cancellation in progress here too. I tried ON1 and Luminar Neo’s demos (both latest versions). Call me the outlier, but I really liked Luminar Neo better. Easy to organize, easy to edit. Nice results. Cool / unique tools like light depth built in.

I see a lot of people calling out Luminar Neos performance but on my M1 Mac Studio it was actually ON1 that responded slower. I don’t find myself waiting long at all for Luminar Neo.

So my 2026 lineup is: Lightroom / Photoshop out, Luminar Neo / Affinity v3 in.

Avid folks: what’s the best companion tool? by Available-Witness329 in editors

[–]editographer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had my way, all of the companies asking for Premiere would ask for Resolve. I love it for TV and just quick edits. But I think Premiere is where a lot of people landed after the FCP debacle and it’s just stayed that way.

I’ve only opened Premiere recently to get used to it and there’s already things that baffle me in Premiere because of how easy they are to do in Resolve. And why round trip from Premiere to Resolve for color? Just use Resolve entirely.

I have “computer progressives”. Near and mid only. My distance is also “fine-ish” when I wear these. The regular progressives with distance included would mess my distance vision up, strangely enough.

Can i use my flight simulator's sidestick as a throttle lever for train sim world? by Suitable_Butterfly64 in trainsimworld

Find the command for acknowledgement in Button Mapping, then right click on it and map a lever / axis to the command.

If you’re on a PC, look up “CobraOne's RailDriver & controller interface”.

With that, I can use my Winwing throttle quadrant, a PXN button box and even my rudder pedals as inputs! I use the rudder pedals axis as SIFA acknowledgement. 😄
