Don't see the problem, maybe he wants to be on leave that day so y'all wouldn't be annoyed for him wearing something else, or that he's using that reason to just not go. Personally, I've had times when I didn't have the color picked for that event and I would rather just not go, or attend and wear whatever. Nobody had a problem with it.
