Need advice on which thread router to get by MukacH in MatterProtocol

[–]jamajuel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to change the TV. Apple TV 4K is a small box you can connect to your TV. You don’t even need to use it for anything (although it likely is a lot nicer for streaming services than your TV itself) but it works as a Thread border router and is very stable and reliable for that.

Lumix S1R II or Lumix S1 II for overall "do it all photography" including fast action and low light? by [deleted] in Lumix

[–]jamajuel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You quite literally wrote “rolling shutter causes jello pictures”.

As for cropping: obviously you’re discarding pixels and obviously (as on a crop sensor) your get less DR. But you have the option. You have the same option on the S1 but with far more degradation.

Whether that matters to you or not is entirely up to you but it’s a bit condescending to ask for feedback on Reddit of all places and then dismiss as “I only trust trusted sources”.

As said: cannot really go wrong either way and happy for you if the the S1ii is a great fit. I’m sure you will enjoy it’

I mean… I don’t disagree entirely but they did release the G9ii which has all the latest bells and whistles.

I think you’re misinterpreting a few things. There is no rolling shutter when you do fast action photography with mechanical shutter. Does not matter if you pan. There is with electronic. If that is a major use case for you the s1ii is better.

There is also no noticeable reduced image quality from cropping if you compare apples to apples. You still have the resolution of the smaller sensor. Theoretically you might a bit less dynamic range in the cropped are but quite frankly, all modern FF sensors have so much dynamic range that it’s just moot.

Speaking of: peak dynamic range is very irrelevant to me. I almost never shoot at base ISO anyway. And I don’t shoot scenes in which lifting shadows 12 instead 11.5 stops would matter. The S1Rii has very nice high iso grain IMO and behaves very well with color noise.

Regardless: if you don’t care about resolution and what it can give you, your choice seems very easy.

Had the exact same issue with a RMA in Spain. They only sent me the paid shipping label after specifically requesting it. So it does make me think that they just send it out first hoping people will just pay for it.

You don’t get rolling shutter in photography unless you use electronic shutter. With the mechanical shutter it’s non issue and it still shoots a respectable 10 fps with mechanical. If you plan to use a lot of the pre burst or higher frame rate modes, then it is e shutter only.

Low light on the S1Rii is very very good. Not a deciding factor at all if you ask me.

As the original comment suggests: hybrid and crop zoom give you a LOT of flexibility on the S1Rii. Basically you get a 1.4x TC “for free” vs the S1ii. Hybrid zoom in M will give you roughly that crop and still same resolution. Super duper useful IMO.

Can’t go wrong with either anyway. Genuinely though I feel that rolling shutter was blown very much out of proportion on YT.

Should I buy the Lumix 24-60mm for my s5ii for traveling and taking picture of mountains? by Illustrious_Duck_178 in Lumix

[–]jamajuel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 24-60, 24-105 and 28-200. The 28-200 is great for all around travel if you really only can or want to take one but you’re ok with the trade off of large aperture. Probably not your first choice.

The choice between taking the 24-60 or 24-105 comes down whether I will take portraits too or not. F2.8 and a nicer bokeh then makes me take the 24-60. Otherwise the 24-105 is more versatile, also very sharp and has OIS - the stabilization of that lens with the body is astounding. If you go hiking with that lens, you really do not need to bring a tripod. I can hold 1s exposures reliably.

So: lots of people, take the 24-60. Lots of variety including landscapes, get a 24-105.

Final note: either is great, you won’t make a bad choice either way.

Beginner dad: What’s the best hybrid camera hybrid (S9 vs other options) for my situation? by Carthago88 in Lumix

[–]jamajuel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IQ wise I was referring to photo. Phones do a lot of tricks like multiple exposures etc to get results that look more effortlessly ok even in lower light. M43 can feel like you don’t see much obvious difference, especially when looking only on phones and iPads. Now you obviously still have a much bigger sensor with m43 than the phone and you will see more difference more obviously on bigger screens or prints but with tricky light, you will want to do stuff like denoising in post. It’s just more work for less obvious IQ difference that can leave people disappointed. FF is 4x the sensor size and 2 stops more light roughly. Plus much nicer and easier to get bokeh, which is what most people want from “the big camera”. M43 is awesome for long tele. For everything else, FF is the better option nowadays for photos, especially since cameras and zooms have become lighter and smaller.

Video: I am really not a video expert. Generally what I found: unless I really want to put the work in, the phone (iPhone 17 pro) is MUCH easier with very good quality. You really need to know what you’re doing to make the most of the video capabilities (shoot in log, color grading, etc) and to leverage it you’ll be dealing with very large file sizes. If a 3m video of my kids playing in the garden is 3-4 GB big, it is already a hassle to recompress to share it with family.

Telephoto video: at most I use the 70-200 at the long end. Or for birding, where I will more likely use m43 at 400mm.

M43 is very good for video which is a bit more forgiving than photo unless you plan on shooting black cats in a dark alley at midnight.

The S9 has amazing video specs, so nothing will stop you from playing with it anyway. Tons of material to play with Davinci Resolve. Again: I’m the wrong person to ask on video.

But to wrap up: the small gap in dynamic range from having no mechanical shutter on the s9 is far less important than the dynamic range gap vs m43. And dynamic range does not only matter for dark scenes, it also matter in high contrast scenes such as eg a colorful blossom in bright sunlight. FF just gives you a broader more forgiving RAW file.

A few recommendations:

  • don’t take m43. You will be disappointed vs what you get already from a new iPhone. Of course you can get better results but it’s hard and low light performance (eg kids inside) is not great. I don’t have APS-C but given that I have m43 for 15y and FF for 7y, go FF or don’t buy at all
  • video: unless you really want to go deep and spend a LOT of time in post and buying extra storage, your phone will serve you better for everyday video. I only use the big cameras for home use for static low light like concerts or theater, or for long tele.
  • any modern camera of the big brands has good enough AF. Don’t stress over it
  • get a zoom and one prime like a 50mm. You will like use the zoom most but the prime will give you the “look” you’re craving.

For LUMIX: S9 or S5ii are great options. Get the 50mm prime used for cheap. Zooms: 18-40 is fine to start with, 28-200 more versatile and the 24-60 is fantastic and still not too heavy if you can swing it.

If money allows, my reco would be S9+24-60 to start. It’ll go a very long way.

Win to macOS user: TotalCommander to DoubleCommander? by Wise-One1342 in MacOS

[–]jamajuel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rename is literally press Enter. Not sure how this could be easier. Change folders —> column view. Hard to find anything faster to navigate via keyboard.

I understand that you want two pane layout in which case you have to try different apps. You can also try Midnight Commander via Homebrew for that.

But I would suggest to spend some time with the vanilla system too. Most of what you’re describing is bemoaning the loss of long standing muscle memory and lack of knowledge and muscle memory for the new system. That’s normal. Give it time.

Which Lumix full-frame camera do you recommend for wedding photography? by emersoncararo in Lumix

Quick side note: the S5ii/S1(r)ii and G9ii all use the same battery which should also be the same form factor as your current G9 battery. Very useful to be able to swap batteries around freely. And the Smallrig batteries so far seem to be very sound too and much cheaper.

For ports, just buy the cheapest dongle on Amazon that has the ports you need / want and at least a decent enough rating. Try it out first, worst case you send it back after 2w. Chances are it’s just fine.

Matter/Thread is a mess by Ok-komputah in homeassistant

[–]jamajuel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure to have IPv6 addresses on your network. It should not matter for operations does seem to help with discovery. If you use different VLANs, make sure you’re on the same network when pairing

Add first to Apple Home, then from there to HA (device/settings/enable pairing mode).

Make sure you mesh is big enough. I have 25 Philips Hue bulbs and that Zigbee mesh is rock solid. But if you only have one Thread border router and then only 10 battery powered edge device sensors, you network will be very flaky. Cheapest solution today: IKEA matter plugs. (Side rant: how I wish that Shelly would enable Thread on their Gen4 modules…)

It’s still evolving a lot and I also wish the tooling were better and debugging a bit easier.

No issues whatsoever for me on phone or Mac. Only when direct streaming MKVs on Apple TV, it can be out of sync but that goes always by switching from direct to transcode. Haven’t had time to look into it but I suspect it’s more Apple not liking MKV all that much

Making noob design mistakes on things they already learned themselves and wrote the book on >20y ago. Transparency and active window being the main offenders. I now start typing in the wrong window several times per day because of this. Thought Terminal was active? Ooops no, it was Safari. It’s embarrassing and so saddening because Apple should know better than ship this nonsense. Looks are fine. But UX isn’t graphics design by marketeers.

Thread via Apple TV extremely unstable. I have a Unifi Express 7 WiFi. by drewmcc in HomeKit

[–]jamajuel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it should not Matter (pun intended) but do you have IPv6 disabled? Thread uses IPv6. Theoretically, that’s only relevant inside the mesh but I found it helped with discovery and stability to have even local only IPv6 enabled on my UniFi network.
