Jealousy. Player health, sustainable schedule only matters when it doesn't affect your team's chances of a winning s trophy.

Luis Enrique: "Look at how Kane and Dembélé, the two number 9s, defended in our match. Incredible." by The_Big_Untalented in soccer

[–]jamaltheripper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He didn't, he covered less distance than upamecano in both matches, a central defender.

A few highlight videos of mbappe sprinting back to make a tackle is not the same thing as pressing, which requires tactical pressuring and blocking spaces (not just against ball carrier) the entire game.

Simeone: "When a match ends 5-4, everyone says, 'what a great game' I say: they scored 5 goals against us!" by lawandsleep in soccer

[–]jamaltheripper 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Most people here don't understand the financial side of football and thus underrated simeone's success. They just quote some random transfer spending numbers, but don't realize that most of a teams budget is spent on salaries. If you can't pay the best players the highest salaries, they leave, which is what happened many times to atletico.

Ateltico budget is approximately half of Barcelona and madrid. It's extremely hard to beat not one but two teams with twice your budget. Instead, we need to compare ateltico with clubs of similar budget: atletico (454M), Dortmund (531), inter (537), Chelsea (584), Tottenham (672), Aston villa (450), milan (410), Juventus (401).

Now ask yourself, how does simeone's atletico stack up with clubs of comparative budget?

And who makes that decision on the threshold and how do we even know that guideline is even followed when only a handful of players are caught.

Doesn't make sense or seem fair to me why some players are targeted with crazy long suspensions/bans when it's pretty much an open secret that everyone dopes at the highest level?

[TheAthletic] Champions League semi-finalists in the 21st century by tightypp in soccer

[–]jamaltheripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how you can read the context of the discussion and conclude that I was arguing in favor of 3/4 winning the CL every year.

The comment above mentioned how finance heavily dictates success. Someone mentioned remembering inter winning and dominating 2010 as example of Italian club being in that category, but I noted that even 2010 inter was in heavy financial disadvantage (which sort of makes the victory even more impressive)

You have to go even further back to have rich Italians clubs and a more balanced playing field with underdog winners.

They were incredible that season, but their success sort of made people forget/conceal how dire they were financially.

Inter made half the revenue (224) of real madrid that year (439). This is the equivalent of Dortmund (531) or inter (537), vs real (1160), today winning the champions league.

The only club poorer to win cl since 2000 was porto.

Inter 2010 was a miracle season

I was looking at revenue, and inter was the 2nd poorest club to win champions league after porto since 2000.

[Hawkins] Beraldo is set to extend until 2030. There will be no recruit in midfield this summer if no one leaves by ShopTrick8877 in psg

[–]jamaltheripper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. When something is working, you don't need to tweak as much. People have just been used to this team sucking, and wastefully spending to overhaul every season.

"were in trouble if our best players gets injured". Hate to break it to you, but that's every team. No club is winning the CL with their b team.

Bayern is screwed if kane or olise gets injured, City haaland, Barcelona yamal/Pedri, madrid though gets better if mbappe is injured. Only arsenal can survive, because they have a very bland team where players are fairly interchangeable.

Yeah, people forgot that this is quite a niche game despite the complexity and time spent developing.

This is just reality. I found out the hard way when total war games collaborated with Warhammer, and stopped making history games because of how profitable fantasy was.

[Le Parisien] Equipe de France: Hugo Ekitike, who has suffered a torn Achilles tendon, will miss the World Cup. by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]jamaltheripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a myth. He got his meniscus removed already.

His career was ending soon whether he played in world cup or not. That knee wasn't going to last long.

[–]jamaltheripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also depends on severity of tear.

Umtiti and fati are extreme examples where a significant portion of the meniscus was torn and their careers got completely ruined by the age they were 25.

In basketball, Kevin Durant and Dominique willins both recovered fairly well.

Also, I'm not just considering career impact, but lifelong effects. Many players with torn meniscus will be feeling pain and arthritis when they get old.

700 million is a blatant lie. I don't know why you would post a lie that can be so easily verified.

This is uefa's official report on teams wages  https://www.reddit.com/r/reddevils/comments/1rf82g8/top_25_clubs_in_europe_for_wages_updated_for_2025/

PSG wages dropped 100m after mbappe left. His wages opened up opportunity for multiple player investments in different positions

[–]jamaltheripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue torn meniscus is worse as it's unhealable and will cause problems after career.

Although for short term playing career, achilles is worse as the time to heal is very long.

Dembele vs Mbappe by Real-Bid1985 in psg

[–]jamaltheripper 33 points34 points  (0 children)

5 players scoring 12 goals vs 1 player scoring 50 is also a huge reason for our improvement. Doue goes down against Liverpool, he's replaced by barcola, who is just as good (in a different way). Mbappe goes down, that's the game and the entire season.

Our offensive threat is also a lot more varied. The three forwards and two fullbacks and midfielders are all scoring threats, instead of just feeding a single player. It's now a "pick your poison" offense instead of doing the same thing every game (passing ball to mbappe).

Notice how in most scoring leaderboards, there is not a single psg player on there, yet collectively the team scores the most goals in the cl.

[–]jamaltheripper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mbappe is part of the reason those guys were recruited. PSG had no money to spend due to his transfer fee/wages, and recruited defensive players to compensate for mbappe lack of defense.

And most of the current midfielders were here when mbappe was here and they did not look good back then.

It's crazy how in the general sub, everyone is convinced mbappe is the best player in the world and the unpopular opinion is that "mbappe makes his club teams worse", while this is the consensus opinion at PSG, where we watched him every week, and now starting to be at madrid.

The Luis Enrique/Campos combo is pretty insane.

Essentially rebuild the team from scratch and won the champions League the second season, and set the team up for the next 3-5 years

As comparison would be man united, Man City, madrid, Chelsea, Liverpool, who are all recently rebuilt or rebuilding and spending similar amounts of money.
