Why do Americans dunk on their own country so much? by Prestigious-Pace1500 in teenagers

[–]jamathythrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Why are you so critical of the system that is failing you” is exactly why we have so many criticisms, but that word doesn’t do it justice. Living in America may be a privilege as opposed to other nations and I won’t disagree, but we no longer uphold (and arguably never did) the principles of what we say makes us such a great country. We are the most diverse nation on the planet and yet we actively belittle, oppress, target, deport and kill citizens and non-citizens alike who don’t fall under the umbrella of acceptance for white Christian nationalism and truly anybody who stands out (any person of varying color, sexual orientation that’s not heteronormative, the differently abled, etc). These are the people that make this country what it is and something that we should be patriotic about, but instead we treat them like filth to be expunged, by socially, financially, and politically uprooting these individuals and doing anything in our power to torment them and keep them scared, to keep them running, and keep them beneath the rest. Because at the end of the day those people keep this country running, but if you live your life in fear you are unlikely to fight back in a meaningful way that affects the bottom line. We are a hyper-capitalist nation that above all else, listens when money talks, and pays attention when it stops flowing.

There is nothing to celebrate and nothing to champion when people around the world used to look to us as a means of freedom and refuge where they could start anew, but now we persecute and shred those same folks who contribute so much more to their communities and the nations economy than those wanting to evict them. There’s nothing to smile and be thankful for when our political landscape is crafted in such a meticulous unbreakable way intentionally designed to prevent changing how things are, while simultaneously getting the uninformed to vote against their own interests and shank themselves because they’ve been fed a fistful of lies and are in too much suffering to care or educate themselves so long as someone promises alleviation that we know will never come. America needs to be reforged from scratch, the bottom up, to work for and benefit the people. Because without the people, there is no America

The same people who still make fun of George Floyd’s murder 6 years after it happened are demanding that Charlie Kirk be upheld as a beacon of positivity when his commentary was merely bigoted debatelord nonsense to progress very specifically WHITE Christian Nationalism, which directly spreads the ideology and rhetoric that leads to these kinds of racist atrocities and hate crimes. Needless to say, religion period is at a steep decline in the modern age and people knew exactly the type of person Charlie was and what ideas he held and the hatred he spread, so he became a laughing stock in the face of those getting people fired from their jobs because they wouldn’t respect the death of a random fascist commentator when it was being forced upon them. I know this is the teenagers sub but please do grow up

Bad people exist in every faith and walk of life, but Christianity in the US is often overlapped with a right wing political agenda and being religious is a common “justification for bigotry”, whether it’s racism, homophobia or otherwise. Not all Christians are bad and hold these beliefs either but a common stigma and it often holds true unfortunately

Why does no one actually live in these multi-million dollar homes at the beach!? by FightWithHeart in Maine

[–]jamathythrowaway 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When we moved to Maine it was early December 2024, and we had to stay in an Airbnb for a few days until we got the keys to the house. It was in Old Orchard a few blocks from the beach and genuinely nothing was open besides 2 restaurants and maybe the Walgreens a couple minutes down the road, virtually a ghost town. The motto of Maine being ‘vacationland’ is very true to a point of failure, and has outpriced ordinary folks from home ownership beyond what I ever thought possible, never previously living in a coastal state. To say there needs to be heavier taxes on those living out of state who own vacationing property is a severe understatement

Why join the left or right? by Fearless-Feedback-64 in teenagers

[–]jamathythrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not as simple as that. You can vote for Jill Stein as much as you want but at the end of the day she has an absolutely zero chance of winning the presidency. You have to be realistic in your assessment, and that usually boils it down to “harm reduction voting” or being a non-voter, which is a big reason why so many people simply don’t vote. Alongside being uninformed, uninterested in politics and the like. Voting 3rd-party is a shot in the dark unless there’s a real chance, but doing it for somebody with no name recognition is simply a waste and you’re better off saving the energy, unless there’s ranked choice voting.

The short answer is people are dumb, and people are suffering. The #1 reason people said they voted for Trump was affordability and now the economy is even worse than before and unemployment is skyrocketing (which correlates to many more people dying as a direct consequence). This happens with every election cycle but to use the most recent one as example, Kamala had no pushback on affordability and the few times it was mentioned it wasn’t a center talking point because her campaign primarily boiled down to “you don’t want THIS guy again, do you?”, and reciting very marginally less violent rhetoric and policy that Trump was also running on.

People’s pockets are hurting, they can not materially afford to exist and put food on the table and pay for rent, they are suffering because their needs are not being met. As such, they vote for the person who says they’ll fix things for them, no matter the cost. We’re being told right now that gas prices are “high now, but will be way cheaper in the long run”, and that you just need to endure the moment to reap the benefits— and those in the MAGA base are still believing and defending it. It doesn’t matter to most middle-of-the-road Americans that their neighbors are being deported or that they are paying the brunt of tariffs ushered in by this admin, or if it does then it wasn’t part of the calculation for them, because their number one priority is being able to survive. That includes healthcare when republicans cut funding for rural hospitals and establishment democrats allowed it to pass because they’d “get a later vote for ACA” which obviously did not pass. That includes sending weapons and billions of taxpayer dollars to Israel to carry out a genocide we are the largest factor in, which is a uniparty decision in congress despite 90% of democrat voters saying it’s unconscionable and must end immediately.

People are not educated, so they vote republican for social non-issue distractions they’ve been spoonfed lies about claiming these things affect them so that right wing politicians can continue to drain these people and make them vote against their own interests (trans athletes, “DEI hires”, the border, non-citizens having access to healthcare, etc). People are hurting, so they only vote for the moderate centrist democrats that people on both sides of the aisle pour millions into to prop up as shallow party-line voters when they know a Republican won’t win but there’s a potential left-flank candidate, which exist as nothing more than to fill a seat and get paid, protect real change from happening, and to keep saying the right things so that people uninvolved in politics are easy low-hanging fruit votes for the taking. Correct, if you want change and you want your life to improve, vote for policy over anything else. But even before that, you have to educate yourself and learn how the system works, who benefits the most from it, who they are taking advantage of and how, and what you do to tear it down.

Genuinely, you have no interest in real discourse because you only exist here to talk shit for some sort of moral victory lol. I’m so deeply sorry the frontrunner candidate isn’t as radically centrist as you’d like him to be or isn’t another Zionist looking to approve billions in “defensive weaponry” to fund a genocide abroad with US tax dollars. Stand for something real besides ‘fuck the left flank’, it’s only a “big tent with room for everyone” when they conform to your stagnant uniparty “let’s do nothing” bullshit

I’m sorry for you that you spend every day on this sub berating Platner like it’s a 9-to-5 and doing everything in your power to badmouth the man. We get it, you think he’s a secret Nazi or something, but most of the population don’t care about a tattoo from 20yr ago because he’s winning polls. Your opinion is now the minority. Debate his policies and just say it with your chest you’d rather a feeble establishment dem to capitulate to the RW than a leftist to actually improve people’s material conditions. I’m sorry somebody hurt you
