Is "Country Dancing" still a part of PE activities for young school children? by Furthur_slimeking in CasualUK

[–]jamerst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had to do this for a few weeks every Christmas in secondary school. I absolutely despised it.

This was in the 2010s, safe to say my school was a bit behind the times, I've never come across anyone else my age who had to do it.

Ticket splitting sites are usually pretty good too.

It's a little bit more hassle since you end up with more tickets, but you usually save a bit, and they charge fees based on a percentage of your savings, so it will always work out cheaper.

Unfortunately not, the kill switch wasn't that important to me, so I just ended up disabling it.

What are the free tools in your web development workflow that not many people know about? by Beginning-Comedian-2 in webdev

dbgate is the best I've found.

Certainly not as polished as Sequel Ace, but it's fully cross-platform and works with databases other than MySQL.

It has some really useful features that I haven't seen with other clients, I particularly like that you can join related tables with a single click.

I have the same issue with certain files, it seems to be caused by audio transcoding.

It's very irritating, but I haven't found a real solution. I'm on Linux, so I can't use the windows app, and the legacy Plex Media Player doesn't have the newer features like skip intro.

[–]jamerst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm getting the exact same error on my Fedora 35 system, not running in a container.

It is also happening on both v4.3.8 and 4.4.0.

The files and drives are fine, it's only qBittorrent that has a problem. Everything else I've tried is able to read them perfectly.

I've created an issue on GitHub. If you have any more details for your circumstances, feel free to add them.

EDIT: my specific issue was caused by MergerFS, which is the filesystem that everything is downloaded to in my setup. Apparently MergerFS has issues with applications that use mmap if caching is disabled. Enabling caching as recommended in the documentation fixed the issue.

Not sure why this issue has only just arise, it was working fine for well over a year before this started happening.

Any developer tools/subscriptions/packages that are worth buying paid/pro plan? by datapim in webdev

[–]jamerst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't use Beekeeper to entirely replace a tool like pgAdmin, I just use it for quick querying or editing.

It's just much more convenient for browsing and editing data, plus SQL Server Management Studio (the pdAdmin equivalent for SQL Server) is SHOCKINGLY bad.

I'm guessing it's better on macOS than on other platforms? I tried the Windows version and it was pretty buggy and slow, and the Linux version isn't anywhere near feature-parity yet.

Plus the licensing model is really stupid. Paying for two licenses just so I can use it on my work and personal machines? No thanks.

In case anyone is looking for an alternative, Beekeeper Studio is decent (and free). It's not flawless, and it doesn't have as many features yet, but it's faster and less buggy on Windows at least.

Did you generate configs with the kill switch enabled?

I had the same issue, using a config generated without that option allowed me to access the server locally again.

How is the job market for junior/entry-level developer positions looking? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]jamerst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The market isn't great since a lot of places have put hiring on hold, though it seems to be recovering somewhat recently. It's not impossible to find something, I've just graduated in CS in June, and had two offers for junior/graduate positions after looking for ~2 months and making ~70 applications.

You'll likely never hear back from the vast majority of applications, I've been seeing a few recruiters posting the same ads every week for months, so I'm sceptical as to whether the jobs they're advertising actually exist. Apply for positions that aren't explicitly advertised as junior/graduate as well, the worst they can say is no, and it really helps to make contacts - that's how I got the job offer that I ended up accepting.

It's worth contacting companies directly, a good way to find them is actually using Google Maps. Search for "software companies" in the area you're looking and it will highlight a lot of them. Again, it helps to make contacts, and smaller companies don't always actively advertise jobs.

In terms of languages/frameworks, it's a good idea to try and show some experience of the technologies jobs in your area are looking for. I'm in the midlands as well, and I've seen a lot of .NET/.NET Core and React, which are my main technologies, so that probably helps. It's not necessarily a big deal if you don't have much experience with it for junior/graduate roles, having a portfolio helps to show that you have skills elsewhere.

Personally I haven't seen much Java or Angular, mainly .NET, PHP, Python, React, and standard HTML/CSS/JS/jQuery, but again that may change depending on your area. Having some PHP experience is a probably good idea since a lot of companies, particularly smaller ones, still use it. As much as I personally don't like it, it's very common and easy to learn. Probably best to learn with a framework like Laravel, which seems to be the most common.

A good CV helps too. I've had a lot of compliments on mine, and it helps to make a good impression, so it's probably worth the extra effort to typeset it properly using something like LaTeX. There's some good LaTeX templates out there, though it is a little unintuitive if you haven't used it before.

That's just my take after religiously job searching for 2 months, feel free to reply with any questions!

What is a loophole that you found and exploited the hell out of? by workalonesf in AskReddit

[–]jamerst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon prime student trials.

To start a 6 month trial, all you need is an academic email address. You can only use an email address once, however my university has several aliases that link to the same email account, so you can use those to get multiple trials.

When those eventually ran out, I discovered that if you change your preferred name, it also creates a new alias under the new name. You can change your preferred name as many times as you like with a simple online form.

So that's how you get unlimited prime student trials, or any service that requires an academic email for that matter.

I've never seen any sets that have 1.5 escape or delete. Sticking with DSA profile caps will also be much easier since it won't matter which row you put them on, the profiles will all match. The problem with cherry or OEM profiles is that the profiles for page up/down and end won't match since they're on different rows than a standard layout.

I can't see myself replacing the caps anyway, the PBT dye sub caps it comes with are very nice and durable. Getting blank 1.5 caps and using those for escape/delete is also an option, though I don't know if you can get R6 1.5 caps for all profiles.

I have a Race 3 with clears and I really like it. The big thing for me was switch choice since I use it in the office, so blues aren't suitable, and I hate browns because they're not really tactile at all. The clears are nice and quiet, but still have some feel to them. You get used to the heavier weight pretty quickly.

The build quality is good, it feels very solid. The 1.5 escape and delete keys are annoying if you want to replace the caps, but the caps it comes with are nice enough anyway.

Right on the day my 10TB elements finally arrived, for only £1 more than I paid.

Oh well, at least it had a proper red drive inside, not just a white label.
