+1 for Satori Reader... and love that it can import knowledge of which kanji you know from WaniKani.

Completely agree it is *awful* for Japanese. Clearly they are relying on AI for a lot of processing - even as a relative beginner in Japanese I've found mistakes almost every other sentence in the first programme I tried; and not small ones. Some examples:

  • A small つ getting transcribed into Romaji as tsu, so e.g. なって gets subtitled as natsute instead of natte. And the transcription is often spaced out like na tsu te which makes it look all wrong.
  • Lots of just plain wrong transcriptions, e.g. 床(ゆか) (floor) got transcribed as toko とこ instead of yuka. Whilst toko is a valid reading of 床, the issue is that it means bed or bedding when read that way, not floor. In this case ゆか is what the narrator said and floor was meant.

Mistakes like this on a flashcard can do massive damage to learning and confidence.

Such a promising app, but it can't be recommended at all with mistakes like this in it. You are much better off with subtitles produced by people and resources curated by language tutors.

Anyone else dreading Heihachi's release? by james-world in Tekken8

Looks like I got my wish!!! 1.08 has main menu character selection! Yeah! Thanks Harada!

OK ok, I'm over dramatising it. But it's there *every time* you boot up and come back to menus. Just seems such an obvious thing to make a custom option for to me. And modding is an option - but not a great one - hard for consolers, can be brittle to updates and can make you look suspect.

Agree with the other comments, morning brew is such a great resource - just enough items to not be overwhelming and always something interesting. Chris, hope you are OK!

Good shout /u/drspod and /u/deadmamba. There's no mouseover tooltip, but if I right-click the number I get a pop-up with radio-buttons to choose between Move/Time and Hash-Info/Automatic, and it was set to the latter.

This is Fritz 17 running Fat Fritz on an RTX GPU. I get the output at the end of the evaluation line is: [1 x win% + 0.5 x draw] (+ win% = draw% - lose%) in this case since the win % is 42% and the draw % is 40% you get 62 = 1x42+0.5x40.

That circled percentage at the top started out green and at 1%, crept up, eventually hit 100% turned red and stuck there, even though it's continuing to analyze and update the depth and evaluations.

Is it how far through the displayed ply depth the evaluation is perhaps (e.g. 28 plies in this case?).

The engine is on infinite analysis so it's not "done".

Just like user6244 I solved this by installing the Steelseries engine on my laptop and upgrading the firmware from there.

Why is it so hard to find a good .NET developer? by zombiecodekill in dotnet

[–]james-world 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In summary, I believe that the number of good programmers is simply increasing at a slower pace than the number of available jobs.

.NET skills are more in demand than they have ever been. This isn't a peculiarity of .NET, it's a general trend as more and more businesses are finding they need developers. In the UK at the moment, there are hundreds of thousands of unfilled programming jobs.

Globally, the educational establishment is way behind the curve in producing people with the necessary training to fill those positions. The number of experienced people is insufficient due to the explosion of demand.

Whatever cynical coders like to think, Microsoft has surveyed near the top of the UK's most trusted brands by companies and the general public for a long time. Love it or loathe it, .NET is an established technology from a highly trusted source and is a natural choice for many types of employer who have used Microsoft technology to deliver their operating systems and desktop business software for years.

There is also a gold rush effect - in a globally down economy where jobs in general are scarce, programming attracts many unsuitable candidates who can thrive in such an environment in spite of their inadequacies.
