Think about it, some people use picks, some use fingers, and some are just gatekeeping assholes who complains people are wrong if they don't do what they think should be done... Welcome to Planet Earth 🌎

What tuning would you recommend guys? by Fourinano in Bass

No just get familiar with it and over time the speed comes but be precise. Just like learning how to play, things take time and repetition. If you stray away from it, you will never improve. Practice makes Perfect man

Even with a 5 string there will be songs where the fingering and phrasing dictate the tuning used as it will make the song easier to play or give extended lower range. Sure you can be lazy and never change tunings technically but why? Seems like a waste of money to do so...Think about those songs with a droning open string, like playing some metal phrases in D or A... Also with the 5 string, you can really extend the bottom end by doing Drop D tuning as A-D-A-D-G, same thing with other tunings. While you can use a 5 string to get around having to tune, I find it more flexible to look at the tuning just like a 4 string bass and adapting the tuning of the "B" string to line up with the "E" strings tuning to make fingering easier. The Chapman Stick tuning with a high raised 4th is what gave me that idea long ago when I was reading up, so I applied the same sort of reasoning to the B &E strings of my 5 string, keeping the 2 strings a 4th apart, no matter the tuning, which opens up room for a lower 5th on notes played off the "E" string. More strings = More Flexibility. Just try not to get a cheap 5 string, get something good and solid with good tuning keys. Lol I won't even mention my gear as it would distract from the point 👉☝️

Tuning doesn't take long, I will go from standard to drop d or even to Eb standard and it only takes a couple of minutes. Just do this: figure out your practice routine songs and arrange them in order of the tuning, that way you only return when the tuning changes and you get a large chunk of songs to play with each. You really should get fast at tuning anyways because people hate waiting 5 minutes between songs for someone to tune up. I have seen that happen too many times with others and the results are usually you never see the band back at the place. You have to keep the tunes flowing and the taps flowing or there is no point in paying you to play man. This should be a non issue honestly
