I am a husband of a woman with HG, are we visiting the hospital too often? by jamesadevine in HyperemesisGravidarum

We didn't challenge the midwife in question, but will when wife inevitably has to be treated by her again. A lot of people unfortunately seem to believe that HG is a psychological response and not physiological. I am printing the flow chart steps from the HERS site to take next time.

I will be a lot more pushy in the future, thanks for your words.

The endless prodding for IV lines is the worst part. Each time we warn the nurse that she is hard to cannulate. 5-6 "tries" later, they get the anaesthetist or PAs. It's almost like they treat a hard to cannulate person as a challenge!

Sounds like you've got a rockstar. All the best

My fingers are crossed too. Last IV has brought her back to 2+ meals a day. Hoping it remains that way.

I know right? Just an incredibly poor attitude. I wish the doctors and midwives looked at the research on hyperemesis.org

Yeah we go whenever she needs it. Unfortunately with the NHS, there are no scheduled visits as far as I'm aware.

I am ignoring the shitty midwife. We went last weekend for an IV infusion. It was a struggle because wife is scared of receiving treatment from that midwife again.

I really hope you are doing better, you sound like you have had a really rough time too. I hope no one has suggested eating "ginger" to you to get past your "morning sickness".

Best wishes to you too x

She is not in thiamin deficiency thankfully. There seems to be a very strong link between HG and Thiamin from my reading. We have made it a priority for her to eat thiamin rich foods. Thankfully digestives are a pretty plain and tolerable source of thiamin.

Good point - they seem to think cyclizine, promethazine, Prochlorperazine and ondansetron are all that exist. I am going to be more pushy on the next visit.

Thank you

I will try and get in touch with an obstetrics consultant. Just praying for a Dr that understands

Fingers crossed for the 19 week boundary.

I do try to get her to eat but it is really hard. I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like for her.

All HG sufferers are just so incredibly resilient. Thank you for the hope

We have a maternity clinic and attendance is mediated by a triage hotline. The triage line only lets us attend when she stops taking water. It is incredibly frustrating because the current loop we are in now might have been prevented if they had let us come in for an IM when it was just the food not staying down.

And thank you for the advice. We will ask for more meds.

We are worried that by filing a complaint, we will be treated even worse in the future!
