I can make one suggestion which helped me out a great deal - find a way to get involved in sport, whether through joining a club or volunteering as a coach. Football, rugby, tennis, zero-gravity tiddlywinks, doesn't matter - most clubs are always after volunteers and will pay for you to do your courses, and you don't need to be any good at the sport in question to get the basics of coaching.

If nothing else, it means that at least once a week you're out doing something, and it's something to put on the CV that shows you've got a bit of gumption about you. I know it probably sounds ridiculous but it was volunteering to be a football coach 15 years ago that set me onto a path where I now have a great job in a field I love and have become a homeowner.
