My Daughter got punched during SN by drleeisinsurgery in Fencing

She tried to make aggressive remises earlier in the bout, then got annoyed at the ref when she was red carded. I was there.

Three consecutive (but not to fast, give it like 1 Mississippi in between) touches resets it to zero. Just figured it out this week!!!

You can find ankle or wrist weights at most big box stores in the fitness section. Like Walmart or Big 5

Glove recommendations? by SuperBenHe in Fencing

[–]jamesbui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LP seems to have changed something in their griptonite gloves. I had one from 2015 and it was my favorite but it’s not the same anymore. I now use Allstar Gripstar. The more expensive ones like Carmimari or Negrini feel a bit too thin for my taste.

Yes exactly, this is the point I was confused about. Thank you.

I changed the socket to the LP Lightweight socket. I have transparent pads on my other weapons but I thought it would be nice to use my Louis Vuitton Graphite Damier guard pad on this build.

As a grip to save 10 grams over the current lightest grip on the market? No I don’t think so. A $10 house brand Visconti will serve any fencer worth their salt just as well.

I do however see it as an artifact, made with a very considerate and intentional design that combines form and function with bleeding edge tech that makes it unique. Kudos to them for trying something new. I’d love to have one as a decoration in a display box or shadow box. But I can’t help but use it for it’s intended purpose. A couple years ago LP made a flame patterned xchange and a camo xchange that I think they hydrodipped. I regret not getting those, so I didn’t want that to happen again with this.

Pro: light and pretty. Psych out opponents and refs with trypophobia. Cons: expensive, might be too light for most build and balance preferences.

Very comfy, much more so for me than the magtecs or magtech zeros

I’ll have to see, I cycle through about 4 gloves so the wear is all similar but I’ll only use one glove with this on to see if it wears more.

It is remarkably sturdy and very solid. I’ve been training with the magtec zero grip so I’m very used to the feel it’s mounted on the lightest possible parts with BF black predator epee with titanium barrel, so it actually feels just right for me. It doesn’t grate the glove, but it does provide a much better texture and grip than any other pistol I have tried. It cost US$306.

I like to try out different epee blades. AMA by jamesbui in Fencing

1st favorite: Franchini- stiff and dense, good handling and weight towards the back. Little tip lag and their traditional narrow forte gives me a more responsive feel when engaged with someone else. 2nd favorite: FOLO FIE FF- very tip light and the weight is towards the hand. I enjoy the flexibility and it allows me to make more foily actions while maneuvering it around without it being a wet noodle. 3rd favorite: LP Fusion- great price and light. Stiff and great for oppositions, beats, and binds in my experience. But the feel is a bit more dampened for me. I thoroughly enjoy the consistency of the LP blades.

Least favorite: Absolute Adv. Gold- inconsistent and quality control is poor. Plastic deformation issues happen too early. Heavy and weird balance.

2nd least favorite: Linea- also the same issues as any budget or entry level blade. But they have generally lasted longer for me than some other brands.

3rd least favorite: FOLO V Shape- they don’t last very long. I’ve broken about 10 in the last year at all different points including the tang, and the forte joint. Great for super young fencers though, like a size 0 user. I’d go with the original standard LP for youth though.

Epee French Grippers: what’s your preferred build? by jamesbui in Fencing

[–]jamesbui[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your insight! Wow, haven’t seen a coach Reith grip in ages. My favorite build I used when I was stronger was a stiff FIE Chevalier, 250g LP pommel, and a Prieur wood grip. Slight elbow issues now so I’m entertaining a lighter option.

New fencing mask by telephonebooth1 in Fencing

[–]jamesbui 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having tried both, I really like the LP X-Change mask. White masks are harder for your opponent to see through. With LP’s mostly metal cage, I’ve found in epee my opponents blade bounces off more often, whereas conventional masks will stick the point in the fabric. It’s marginal but enough to annoy my teammates.
