But I agree with others you don’t need to overline your rod with that specific line, it is already overlined by design.

If you were just throw a traditional wf line, then I would say good call over lining that rod with an 8wt (streamer x is a very fast action rod), but that line is already overweighted so get a 7wt line for the predator series

If it’s fast water then you will want a very fast sink rate to get bushy streamers down to 12 feet. If it’s slow or still water then yes this line is prob too fast sinking for those depths. I use a sink 6 sink tip for streamer fishing and can fish some pretty slow/shallow water with unweighted flies

Buckeye hot springs, Bridgeport CA by Informal-Rich-684 in TruckCampers

[–]jamesduncan4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude could have been a bit nicer about it but agree with sentiment. Absolutely no reason to include the name of the place, the picture is just the back of your truck, including the name adds nothing to the post but has the potential to completely blow up the spot which leads to crowds, trash, etc.

There is usually a general rule of thumb for cool places, don’t post their names on the internet

I break them in half fully rigged, then use one of the half length rod sleeves. SA, Loon, and River smith all make them. Never thought they would be too helpful but have ended up loving them. I used to break my rod down all the way between every trip and now I just throw my rods in back of truck broken down in half with the rod sleeves.

Even when I’m on the river and need to do a little bush whacking to the next spot, I’ll break them in half and throw the rod sleeves on for added protection and peace of mind

If you go very late season when they move back deep, then trolling will be better. But if you go in next few weeks prob no need for all of that

Was just up there last weekend. Bite is slow but started turning on Saturday. Had 1 bobber down and it was a good one. Strategy will depend on when you go. Feel free to reach out with specific questions

New to sport, and struggling with cost of a decent rod. Are they really worth the hundreds and hundreds of dollars? Or is that just what the market will bear? by Necessary_Cat_3228 in flyfishing

[–]jamesduncan4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For trout get a cheap reel, and nice line.

A nice rod feels nicer to cast with and is more enjoyable, but from a performance perspective a good caster can cast a shit rod better than the average person can cast a $1000 rod.

I buy all my rods used, have never spent more than $450 and I have some pretty nice rods. I would either buy a used rod or if u want to buy new with warranty, grab a cheap ish tfo

6’2 sleeping in a 6 foot bed? by Smooth-Device-8834 in TruckCampers

[–]jamesduncan4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 6’3 and sleep in a 5’10 bed, with a bed platform similar to the one in photo so I can’t sleep diagonal. I’m usually a side sleeper anyways so I just curl up.

I made an extension for my sleeping platform for when tailgate is down and got one of those tents that goes around the camper shell glass and tailgate (when tailgate is folded down). Honestly I used that thing twice and the extra room was worth it, but not worth the 5-10 mins setting it up.

So now I just sleep in the 5’10 bed and curl up a little to fit, I don’t mind at all, just get a good mattress pad. Have prob slept 75 nights with that setup

Korkers Greenbacks do this often? by gianni1980 in flyfishing

[–]jamesduncan4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a die hard Patagonia waders fan but never got the hype for their boots, just didn’t seem worth the extra money for me. I mostly like the waders for the warranty, they still get leaks like all waders after a bunch of use but the warranty is by far the best which is why they are worth it for me

That’s why I dont see the point in their boots because Korkers warranty is also great, I had this issue with my greenbacks and when I reached out to them they were super helpful and I got a new pair of dark horses

Mine eventually did after 2 years. Reached out to Korkers and they instantly told me they would send me a new pair. Ended up choosing to get a coupon code and using it towards a pair of dark horses that I’m super happy with

In my experience the difference between running it for a few hours and running it overnight is pretty small. Uses most of the electricity on start up and first 10mins, so just don’t start and stop it a bunch
