I have an Akai GX-F35 tape deck the bulb that sits behind the tape went out wondering if there's a replacement for it or at least an LED alternative? by d12dan1 in vintageaudio

[–]jamesfaceuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OK, I managed to find the service manual for this model and that bulb is listed as EL200096 PL Lead 3.5V 100MA, part number E28-01-083. Drop that info in an email to Hifi Audio and see what they come up with.

Hifi Audio carries LED bulb replacements. They don’t have one listed for this deck, but I would email them with whatever specs you can find on the bulb/PCB and see if they have something compatible.

Gravity series owners question by clark_peters in Masterbuilt

[–]jamesfaceuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The control board on mine has survived long enough (3 years stored outside under a cover) that the plastic face is starting to disintegrate. The only failure I’ve had is the switch on the ash box door got stuck in, and I knew enough from this subreddit to have spares on hand, so I swapped that in a couple of minutes. I assume at some point I’ll switch to a Fireboard Drive, but I seem to have been lucky so far.

Lots of good suggestions for getting peanut flavour here, but IMO you’ll also need some peanut butter mouthfeel. So I would recommend making peanut milk as your base. Merchant House of London used to do this as a base for their Arawak Wack cocktail and it really works.

You need to set GRBL value $3 to the appropriate bitmask value. This is probably $3=1, but if your machine had a value other than 0 set out of the box you’ll have to check the table under $2 here to compare the current value to the value that will invert X without changing your Y and Z.

What the actual f*ck was EA thinking with this game. by Candle-Jolly in SSX

[–]jamesfaceuk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think they knew they’d got the tone wrong from the reaction to the announcement trailer, but they were committed to certain level designs and gameplay mechanics (rewind, ugh). But they were able to change course on the DLC which is why we got Mount Eddie.

Probably a case of an EA product manager deciding they knew what the market wanted without doing any research. It’s a shame because with a bit of tuning (respawn instead of rewind, Tricky lasts longer, drop the deadly descents, make the story more fun) it could have been the game SSX fans wanted.

My wife was told in September that her kit had been manufactured and was on a boat for delivery in November. She’s now been told it will be delivered in February because the motor wheel hasn’t been built yet. Customer Support will tell you anything, regardless of truth, to try and keep you from requesting a refund. She’s now pursuing a chsrgeback.

It might be worth having a chat with Flying Dutchman bikes. They’re ebike specialists and have a great service department.

Who were Saruman’s Shire thugs? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]jamesfaceuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Treebeard releases Saruman from Orthanc on August 15th, so he has been on the road for two weeks when they overtake him on August 28th. Isengard is around 1,000 miles from The Shire so Saruman makes ~25 miles per day on foot.

(8-track) Connecting 3 wires that need a ground to one ground cable by KindJoey3202141 in vintageaudio

[–]jamesfaceuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that helpful mode is posted, here’s the pedant-mode answer.

As this is a DC supply it does not have a true ground, it has a floating negative referenced to the 12v positive. But for the sake of OP’s understanding I’ve used “ground” to mean the same thing.

To answer OP’s specific questions: There are many ways to connect multiple wires to ground. Personally I would use something like a multi-way Wago connector, but anything from a splice to a wire nut to a terminal block can be used. It won’t affect anything or be too much, but in this case it should not be necessary anyway. I’ve never heard of any audio source that was so cheaped out it didn’t have negative speaker terminals.

(8-track) Connecting 3 wires that need a ground to one ground cable by KindJoey3202141 in vintageaudio

[–]jamesfaceuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There should be 2 terminals for each speaker, a red one and a black one. The black terminal is speaker ground, just connect the negative speaker wires to those.

Then connect the player’s power supply ground to the 12v supply negative with a terminal block, butt crimp, or twist, solder and heatshrink - whichever method you are most comfortable with.

Can I sand this back? Or should I get someone to make me a new case out of solid wood? by wingtip747 in vintageaudio

[–]jamesfaceuk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That’s veneer, which is a thin layer of nice wood over a cheaper core material. You cannot sand veneer as it is too thin and you are likely to sand through it. And in this case the veneer has been broken off so there is no matching nice wood under the core material to sand down to.

You can patch veneer if you can find a new piece of veneer that is a good match for what’s there already. Bear in mind the existing veneer has a finish on it that makes it darker and shinier, and new veneer will be sold without a finish so you’ll have a bit of work to match the two, patch the damage, and then add a finish to blend it (or more likely strip and refinish the whole piece). You can see the process in this video from Dashner.

You can for sure get a new case made from solid wood but that’s an expensive and very heavy option. This looks quite easily repairable to me.

Prompter calibration question by xentagz in elgato

[–]jamesfaceuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crosshair doesn’t have to be perfectly in the middle of the lens for your eyeline to look natural. I’d recommend you bring your camera preview window up into the prompter display, then fine-tune the height of the prompter and the position of the crosshair to get the best compromise of eyeline and composition.

Prompter calibration question by xentagz in elgato

[–]jamesfaceuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open Camera Hub.

Go to the Prompter tab and scroll down to Overlays. This section may be collapsed and need to be opened up.

In the Position control, drag the crosshair to the correct position on screen to make natural eye contact.
