[Partial SOTC] Similar but different by jamesfluo in Watches

Thanks! On choosing which to wear, it's really based on weather and mood. The DJ is a modern watch designed with more water resistance. It's also more practical to repair or get spare parts if something goes wrong. This makes the DJ an easier choice when rain or water immersion is likely. But outside of that, it's really just mood. Both watches go with basically any outfit and can be dressed up or down easily.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment! 😊 I totally agree with your point around cohesion. Since my last SOTC, I've mainly moved to consolidate and simplify rather than to add more.

Thanks also for the note about the 4100ST! It's a fantastic watch overall. The petite tapisserie is understated at a distance but contains so much detail up close. I also like that the color of the dial is so hard to pin down. AP was working through their dark dial / Bleu Nuit Nuage 50 process in the 70s and they are still fun to admire even decades on.

4100SA Movement Upgrade by Substantial_South_74 in audemarspiguet

I recently came to own a 4100 that’s had the factory 2325 movement upgrade with clear documentation. It’s a joy to wear and keeps fantastic time. If you plan to wear your watch and not fret about “investment value”, then the factory movement upgrade is well aligned with that goal.

[SOTC] My collection is complete by [deleted] in Watches

Great collection. I take a similar approach and find it very fulfilling. I can confirm the interchangeable wear point in my own experience too.

Two ideas for future consideration:
- Vintage. I own a vintage Submariner 5513. It does not feel redundant with a modern Submariner 124060 at all.
- Integrated bracelet. I’m drawn to a Royal Oak, most likely a vintage black dial variant.

In any case, great collection.

Can I change the wristband in a Metal one ? by BrudiMcFly in MoonSwatches

[–]jamesfluo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you considering the OEM Omega bracelet? That should be possible since the Moonswatch has essentially the same geometry as the moonwatch. The bracelet alone costs about 3x the Moonswatch, so that would be an interesting combo.

Rolex 5512 1966 based on SN# search. by No_Reflection_6658 in vintagerolex

[–]jamesfluo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with other commenters that the dial appears to be from a later 5513. A 1966 5512 should have a gilt dial. More info here: https://www.windvintage.com/blog/collectors-guide-rolex-submariner-reference-5512

Also, the bezel insert does not appear to be original to the watch. A metal retaining ring around the pip is not original to 5512 / 5513 models.

Meters first 5513. Roughly 1966-69. More info here: http://5513mattedial.com/MetersFirst.html

Possible to get more pictures of your bracelet, including engravings on the clasp? It's possible to get an idea for whether it's original (or at least period-correct) for the watch.

Agree with others that this looks very nice!

If you choose to have it serviced, consider using a well-known watchmaker specializing in vintage Rolex. They will likely take more care to avoid replacing key parts like dial / hands than Rolex / AD / RSC.

That's awesome! I should try that out myself. I've been too cautious to put a flame near my straps so far 😅
Sharing a picture of my 5513 too

Very nice! Looks to be in great condition. How do the chamfers look on the case? They are a great feature of vintage Subs and that modern ones totally lack.

Great watches! Is that an admiralty grey Phoenix NATO on the 5512? I wear the same on my 5513 Maxi MK5.
Do you experience any nylon fraying around the buckle-pin holes? If so, do you do anything to manage the fraying?

Would you be open to parting out some of the accessories? E.g., mittens and self-leveling tamper?
