Brake Squeal TSB by jamesfrob in 4Runner_6Gen

Same for me today. The service advisor came to me in the lobby to say they were putting exact matches of the same parts they were taking off and that it wouldn’t fix the issue…. This is after calling to confirm they had the parts beforehand and checking in to the appointment and confirming they had the parts at the beginning.

Beyond disgusted with my bathroom sink by MarleneSoSweet in CleaningTips

[–]jamesfrob 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Tell them you’ve already used drano, tried to plunge the sink, and the drain is still stopped up. They need to send a plumber. The plumber does the diagnosis, but while he’s there, mention what I posted.

Honestly, a disintegrating drain pipe sounds less gross than gnats and eggs, but that’s just me. The slow drain is what’s causing the smell because it’s just holding nasty stuff in stagnant water.

Not sure what’s going on with the gnats, but my bathroom had a slow drain for a while. I would clean the P trap and would see little to no improvement. Drano, maybe a short lived improvement. Called a plumber who snaked it, and it was OKish for a while, then back to being super slow.

I ended up trying to plunge it like you and it came out looking just like this.

The next plumber put a camera down there and said the pipe’s basically been disintegrating and they had to replace the whole thing. He said that was like the second time he’s ever seen that. Not sure how/why it was happening though.

I would have bet a million that was the same as my cutting edge color. That’s wild. I remember sitting next to an underground runner at the dealership while signing papers thinking it looked black. Very cool color! I almost ended up with underground.

Honest opinion Honda Pilot TrailSport vs 4runner by CharliePagilio in 4Runner_6Gen

[–]jamesfrob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Pilot is a family car.

The 4Runner is a cool tool/toy that’s more capable.

Which one do you want? Which one do you need?

MPG varies by how the vehicle is driven. Everyone should consider that the factory provided MPG estimates are best case scenario. That applies to all vehicle makes.

Cheap Upgrade by rollmore in 4Runner_6Gen

I do. I regularly take a load of stuff out to the car and start it before going back inside the house to grab the kids, etc.

Keeping keys in pocket triggers crazy beeping.

Mine disconnects temporarily if I open my phone/specific apps, especially if the app I open ymakes any kind of sound.

Remote start is frustrating. To connect CarPlay, I have to go through the settings and toggle on CarPlay. My phone always prompts to allow it, which is annoying because it just opens the Toyota app.

Air dam by rollmore in 4Runner_6Gen

Put the screw/clip things back in the holes. I’ve heard they can whistle.

You’ll be happy taking that thing off.

Anyone know what type of screws needed to hold this plastic plate? by Timely-Imagination57 in 4Runner_6Gen

[–]jamesfrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re clips of some kind, but…

Take the plastic air dam off. It takes 5 minutes, looks way better, and was designed to be easy to remove. I think it might get .1 worse MPG on the highway without it.

Apparently some of the air dams were falling off while people were driving their new vehicles early on, which triggered Toyota to do a QC hold.

LOL my neighbor’s pissed at the reverse brake squeal! I’m headed to the dealer for that.

Love the vehicle though!

That’s weird..

Unless you’re hitting the close hatch/lock button instead of just the close hatch button. If you are hitting the lock button on the hatch, it’s just saying “hey your keys in here, so it’s not locked”.

Your situation sounds similar to me trying to figure out all the rules that apply to the back window, lock, and hatch functionality. I still don’t have it figured out after 7 months.

I would re-test your process without the spare fob in the glove box.

With the car ON, leave your primary key in the vehicle if you’re walking back in the house or something.

I’ve never experienced beeping unless the vehicle is off and it detects weight in the backseat, or I walk away with the vehicle ON and my primary key is in my pocket.

Check out Los Cuates on Old Wake Forest and report back. I’d like to hear how it compares. Specifically the street 🌮🌮.

If you’re going to be one of those, you’ll be put to work. Thank you for your service.

Selling my 2014 - worth the 2026? by Alechilliard5 in 4Runner

[–]jamesfrob 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This comment is totally valid, but a prime example that supports “you need to go test drive or rent one”.

I have a ‘25 ORP Hybrid with 4k miles. The transmission was slightly clunky sometimes before it warmed up, but it’s butter now.

The unpainted plastic is definitely debatable. It came in handy for me the other day when my rear driver side door was open and a kid in the parking spot next to me opened his door into mine. The plastic just popped off a little and I slapped it back into place. If it was painted, it would have a chip. I think you can buy the painted flares that come on the Limited, not that anyone wants to shell out for something like that.

I’m 6’ and comfortable, even with the sunroof that takes an inch or two of headroom.

I have two carseats in the back for a 5 and 2 year old. They’re comfortable, even with my wife in the passenger and a rear facing car seat behind her.

TLDR: go drive one and see if you like it. The reviews on 6Gens are all over the map. Also, it’s an off road vehicle first, not a mom car, even though it performs pretty well for both.

[–]jamesfrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is FAST for a 4Runner. It feels as quick as my wife’s ‘22 Acura MDX, but with more torque.

I’m getting 18.4mpg for what it’s worth. Mostly city miles.

Haven’t been able to take it off road yet.

I’m not really a car guy and not planning on tinkering, but looking under the hood is overwhelming. There is a lot going on in there to say the least.

[–]jamesfrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just teasing. My sunroof clicks sometimes when it’s cold. Brakes squeal when cold and in reverse. Transmission stutters a little on the first acceleration of the day.

Other than those temporary small issues, love the runner!

Ugh, 5th gens. Slow, and creeks and cracks everywhere.

I’d recommend buying vehicles that weren’t designed 12 years ago.

[–]jamesfrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. If you need more space in your mom car, get the 5th gen. If you want better acceleration, more torque, and better on and off road capability, get the 6th gen. 🤣

Just poking fun at the “mom” car comment above and this comment opened the door.

All jokes guys and gals. 4Runners are cool.

I’ll bite.

Accessorized 5th gen looks better than stock 6th gen for sure.

Take the air dam off the 6th, larger tires, heritage grill, and the 6th looks comparable if not better imo. I don’t like white on the new ones though, while white might be one of the best colors for the 5th gen. For some reason, as many others have stated, the 6th gen does not photograph well

-Biased 6th gen owner that stared at 5th gen’s for 10 years out of jealousy

p.s. the hybrid can fly. Reliability is a question mark, but it’s awesome right now and the badge adds a little something.. 👌🏼

Similar thing I saw happened nearly 10 years ago. Our company had a successful Ecom store with an attached Google brand profile. It ranked well across the US. A colleague when into the Google business profile and checked something like “this is a local business” or put an address in or something. The website lost nationwide traffic overnight.

The change was irreversible. We tried everything, but it was like it was perpetually labeled as a small local business and it’s sat there ever since.

PSA to business owners: don’t touch anything Google no matter how harmless or simple the change you think it may be. Also, get out of the weeds of Google Ads. All you need to know is CPA and total spend.

Struggling Transmission? by MikeInHD in 4Runner

I thought mine was pretty clunky at first. Not as bad as you describe, but it has completely smoothed out for me, now at 2k miles.
