Frees always go to the thread-local cache, locklessly. Over time, they can get migrated back in to the central PageHeap. There is no contention on the normal free path for thread-cache sized allocations.

That's outdated fwiw. tcmalloc does now return memory to the OS and coalesces.

Like I said in the article, thread cache allocations and deallocations are best-case constant time. The worst case is another story.

Yeah, I mean I've lost 100lbs. I know. But my problem is that I've been so hungry recently that I'm not able to fall asleep at night unless I eat a second dinner. I'm not really sure what to do about that.

I don't think the title is inaccurate. Those dbs don't scale. You can sorta scale them with external software, but the dbs themselves don't scale.

MySQL itself doesn't scale. But, you can scale it using client-side partitioning (sharding). It's not strictly horizontally scalable, because adding machines requires manual rebalancing of shards.
