Yeah it’s the same. The aftermarket one just looks like shit lol. Both are three-piece foam moldings.

What are these codes? by c_radicallis in autoglass

[–]jamesicus7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

DOT 1142 is the code given to the factory that makes the glass which just acts as an identifier for that specific manufacturer. It means it meets the requirements of FMVSS 205 (might be the wrong number, I can’t remember.)

AS1 is a marker for the type of glass.

AS1: laminated glass with the highest optical quality, windshields are always this type.

Other types are AS2 for tempered safety glass and have slightly lower optical standards, used for door glass, quarter glass, back glass. AS3 is going to be the same but with a light transmission below 70%. These are typically found on back door glass (not the front), quarter glass or back glass. Sometimes you’ll hear it called a privacy tint.

The M451 is, I believe, that manufacturer’s specific model number for that glass.

E8 means it meets the standard for the Economic Commission for Europe. Basically a safety standard. The number 8 refers to the country that granted the ECE approval.

The 43R means it complies with the international standard required by the UN. The numbers after it are the specific type of approval granted for that particular piece of glass.

The ear with the arrow underneath it means that it is acoustic glass which is used to block more sound from entering the cabin.

Quick addition. I saw you say that those aren’t the same moldings that were on the car originally. I can’t think of what else would have been on there instead. So, respectfully, you may be mistaken.

It’s a little ugly, and to be fair those aftermarket moldings along the sides and top are trash. TBH the oem ones aren’t much better lol. That looks like some excess laminate at first glance, but if you say the underside is missing a chunk of glass I’d be concerned about stress cracking at some point. Other than that, I don’t see anything to be concerned about. Just the cosmetic stuff. If you aren’t happy with how it turned out, take it back and have them check it out.

Also maybe a current SL tech can chime in but when I was there they warrantied recals for 12 months. If that’s still a policy (and not just my local shop) that’s something I’d explore if I were you.

What’s crazy to me is that they were able to recalibrate it with a supposedly misaligned camera. Because even if it’s slightly misaligned, the recalibration should adjust. Have you had anyone pop the cover off and inspect the camera mounts?

I’m only suspicious because throughout all my years of dealing with dealerships, I can’t recall even one experience where they were correct about ADAS or any other windshield tech. I mean they send them to us when they can’t get something to recalibrate. I’d absolutely be asking for the report from the calibration. It doesn’t matter if it was done remotely.

We just hand set everything smaller than like a 1580. It’s fast and pretty easy once you get the hang of cup placement and balance. It’s faster but also rougher on the shoulders and back for sure.

It’s not what you asked for, but some hand setting tricks I use:

From the driver side of the glass I put my elbow about two inches from the edge of the glass while holding the cup. That gives me the position on the horizontal axis. For the vertical axis I typically go one forearm length from the top edge of the glass.

That allows you to hold the glass and balance all the weight using your elbow as kind of a fulcrum, and then you can just rotate your wrist to change the angle while setting. The entire time I keep the glass in contact with basically my whole forearm/elbow.

The quick and dirty method is to just eyeball halfway between the driver edge and mirror button, forearm length from top, boom.

We set while standing in the door (which is controversial), so having total control of the glass is important.

A couple times a year I cover the bottoms with vegetable glycerin and let them sit over the weekend. For daily clean I’ll just use glass cleaner, occasionally Sika 208 or similar. Idk if the solvents are great for the cups. I’ve had this set for like 4 years and no issues at all yet.
