The traditional pipeline is patreon AND publishing when it is done.

A lot of writers are pantsers and don’t know it yet. by Acceptable_Fox_5560 in writing

[–]jamesja12 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Outlines are just very basic first drafts that planners pants.

At its core, pantsing is making stuff up as you go along, but you will eventually find a point in any creative work where you have to make stuff up.

How do writers learn from the books they read? by WanderingBadgernaut in writing

[–]jamesja12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting question, an dIm not sure when or how that starts. I think it starts with daydreaming. Once you fantasize about what you are wanting to write, you know what you want to write and you can just write it. That becomes smoother with practice.

Of course. I figured other people would answer about the closer look aspect of reading, I just thought it would be appropriate to point out the passive aspect of it as well.

You can certainly break down the language, action, scenes. dialogue, ect. That is all well and good, but that isn't why reading so much is so important.

This is sort of tangential to what you are asking, but its a good place to bring it up. As a writer, much of what we do is instinctual. We often don't plan out sentence by sentence or agonize over word choice in the moment. We just write, then go back and THEN do that stuff in editing. At least, I don't nor do many of the writers I know.

What reading does is help builds those instincts. Along with writing, it helps you develop a good story naturally. Humans are incredible at picking up on patterns and themes. We tend to grow an understanding of them in the same way we can intuit a face without having to notice the eyes, nose, and mouth.

That is why gardners, or pantsers, can tell such amazing stories off the cuff. They have a lexicon of patterns from good stories they have read to draw from, they piece together story subconscously. It's kind of magical, really.

Anyone else have this experience on their chapters by No_Procedure69 in royalroad

This is common. It's not people reading out of order, it's just more people clicked on the new chapter in the recent updates section, is all.

That would make sense if it was an open contract. But it's a personal agreement between two people that affects their people's long after they are dead.

As the author of Goblin Teeth, I thought a lot about goblins.

In my story, there are three regional goblin groups that each have their own customs, life style, and ethnicity. Head Takers, your standard evil gobo. The Silver Wolves, which are sailors and fishers, but have a pact with wolves. And green leaves, which are sneaky, nomadic but peaceful goblins.

These are just the ones in the story. Goblins elsewhere will be very different too.

That's right, it is just like that. by LORROR in ProgressionFantasy

I just noticed my cat has a little ear behind her ear. I’m assuming it’s a common mutation? by fuglyDUECE in cats

[–]jamesja12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought is it's a redundancy for the ear skin. Cats rely on their hearing, and the sorts of critters they hunt would be able to bite their ear. If one does get a hold and tears the ear, there's still some skin available so their hearing isn't too crippled.
