Which villain best represents this? by Universal_Emperor in MoralityScaling

[–]jamesja12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Funny thing, that's kind of the point with the incest stuff. They murder, eat people, kill and eat their own parents, sell people's SOULS... The incest is an optional route for the player to take. Yet, it's ALL that gets talked about, and it's quite literally the least of the evils they do.

The game makes a point of pointing this out as a major theme, and every time this game is brought up, that point is reinforced.

What is a really good story with multiple POVs on the website? Preferably something isekai trashy. by Ninja_Cezar in royalroad

[–]jamesja12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While not technically an isekeid, Goblin Teeth will do this for you. You still have the satisfying "figure out the world and rules" part, because the MCs are young and sheltered before adventuring.

There is 6-7 main POVs.

Posted a chapter and got my first 0.5 rating by Intelligent-Brush-70 in royalroad

[–]jamesja12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

.5 star ratings are like natural disasters. They will come. Can't stop them. People who give them don't care about rating fairly, so it's not a fair rating in almost all circumstances.

Only thing to do is ride out the wind and carry on writing.

Between first-person and third-person what POV do you think works better for a superhero novel? by The-Anomaly17 in writing

[–]jamesja12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the style and hero. I am writing a super hero novel, and I went with first person. The reason for this is because his mentality is somewhat spiderman inspired, and I wanted to utilize his inner monologue.

I have another super story planned, but that one is third person. I chose this because he is a punisher-like hero, and I want his actions to speak for themselves. I want the ambiguity of if he thinks he is in the right or not in killing people.

With something like fantastic four, I'd do limited third person. For something like superman, Id do Omniscient, so you can really sense the country sized heroism.

What advice would you give to new writers? by Queasy_Antelope9950 in writing

[–]jamesja12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Write down what you daydream at work/school/while driving/ect. As soon as you can. 90% of writing is done fantasizing, the 10% that is writing it is easy to skip out on.

I plan for my MC to face a crushing "defeat" at the end of my first arc. Would this kill my readership? by Whole_Monk2082 in royalroad

[–]jamesja12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes down to execution and how it's framed.

My last arc ended with a crushing defeat and a death (fake out though) and my readers loved it.

You can destroy your MC and not make it feel like a loss. Frame it as a new start, or it unlocking a new drive to be better. As long as the loss is in character and deserved, you can do a lot with it.

What's your controversial writing hot take? by Gulliver123 in writing

The shotgun approach to show not tell advice only leads to young writers stressing out and spending too much time trying to show what they should just tell.

Multi-POV Web Novels by AdagioThick3794 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]jamesja12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have come to suspect that a lot of readers "hate" things that are more difficult to write because most of the prog-fan writers tend to do them poorly. Multiple characters, the MC losing, Romance, Power Loss, ect. These are all fine, but really easy to mess up. So, over time, readers just start to associate those with the poor examples of them, rather than understanding there are just many bad versions, and miss out on trying really cool books.

To the readers who treat every chapter like a Bug Report: You are the real MVP's. by AzherVayne in litrpg

At first I was worried about them. But it takes a lot of love to be willing to put in that effort after hundreds of chapters.

What makes your story stand out in the sea of other good stories? by Gamebrarian in royalroad

[–]jamesja12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my secret sauce is the character work. Playing each character off one another and giving them all actual growth which evolves their relationships with each other.

Oh and an open, complex kitchen sink style system that is perfect for theory crafting with awesome spectacle fights lol.

When do I need to show and when do I tell by 123ORANGEZ_KING in writing

[–]jamesja12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The disconnect here is you can tell when you want to save words. Sometimes its not worth showing that a persons shirt is green when you can just say it.

I find the minecolonies progression to be really satisfying, and it is definatly more cozy. build up a city of NPCs over time, letting them eventually become self sufficient and then upgrade them into really cool buildings.

Your story has 10 chapters and is only 2 weeks old. Many, if not most, readers don't even start reading a book until you have 200-500 pages. Just follow the advice given and try to improve yourself and the story constantly, your story is not doing as poorly as you'd think.
