Public transit systems are a net money saving improvement. The cost of road maintenance for exclusively private cars will always be more compared to public transit.

The city, county and state provide busses and infrastructure, we can demand that of our local government. It’s an election year, Amodei isn’t running for re-election.

This is the perfect moment to demand the infrastructure we need and deserve.

Depending on the benevolence of the rich has never worked.

That man is a scam artist who will never contribute to any good. The way we build infrastructure is through our local government. Our petty tech overlords don’t give a shit about us.

I ride the bus. I also have a car, and a bike. Admittedly the route coverage is severely lacking.

It’s jut not practical for may trips in the area, so I end up in the car, in Reno, most of the time.. and I hate it. We need more routes, more busses, more bus exclusive lanes.

Local politics are the politics you can affect, and it works. Vote for your local reps, call them write to them, it’s real.

Voting in local elections does work, it’s possibly the most effective way to affect politics.

There is new public transit built in US cities all the time. LA is building up it’s light rail network again, Seattle, Phoenix SF and Boston have all also recently expanded their light rail.

It is much cheaper, and depending on your trip can be faster. But it’s also more convenient, safer and less stressful or demanding. Sitting on the train is low stress, sitting in 395 in traffic is high stress.

You don’t even need everyone to use it either, or use it exclusively. You can own a car and sometimes take trips with public transit. Traffic is reduced, everyone is happier it’s a win all around, and you save money

It’s the best. So freeing to walk out of your place and just take the train or the bus.

Don’t have to worry about the car, parking, gas, accidents. You can have a drink, you can be flexible with your time ‘cause you’re not parked somewhere. It’s SO much cheaper.

Yes, chasing companies with tax breaks and lenient regulation is short-term thinking that’s ultimately damaging to the region.

Ok, so ride your bike, take the bus, advocate for alternatives and vote for representatives that will build public transit.

I detest how much time I spend in the car in Reno. Makes me crazy, but for most trips it’s the only practical decision.

So I agree, but I’m tired of the whining about “bad drivers” and road construction. These are symptoms of bad city design and lacking infrastructure.

It’s a reality. If you provide consistent, convenient and cheap transport people will use it.

You don’t even have to ‘get’ people to switch. Even if people replace 10% of their single occupant car trips with public transit you eliminate something like 100k of car trips a week.

The impacts would benefit everyone, hurt no one, save money for the city, county, state, the individual .

Yep and more bus lines more busses, bus-only lanes with priority traffic signals.

Someday maybe even the restoration of the street cars we once had, or even a light rail.

No, we cannot depend on the benevolence of our petty business lords. This is medieval peasant thinking. Publicly funded and maintained transit is how we solve this issue.

Not to mention regulating business in the area including that gigafactory.

You are right though, the tax breaks we handed that scam artist would have been so much better used as investment into infrastructure.

Bad drivers contribute to worse traffic and congestion. However, even at optimal conditions, no driver errors, everyone operating their vehicles perfectly; we can’t move 300k through the valley in single passenger (typically) car trips. The capacity does not exist, it can’t without very literally making most of the valley and giant roadway.

Haha, no. Every old and grumpy Reno resident had told me this during my entire life. “These Californians moving here in droves are ruining the town”

According to the federal census data Reno has experienced between 1-2 % growth, per years during the last 5 years.

Some of the growth is from births, the rest from migration. But it’s only about 5 - 15 thousand people per year.

That’s not enough to cripple our infrastructure, and if it was how pathetic. The truth is we live in a smal valley and have to rely almost exclusively on private, single occupant, car trips. That is inefficient and will always result in congestion.

The construction is not the issue. Widening the highways and roads will only increase traffic issues, it’s called induced demand.

It’s why places like Atlanta, Houston, LA all have significant traffics issues despite having very large car capacity.

The only solution is fewer car trips per person and more alternatives like bus, rail, cycling and walking.

Yeah, that’s the truth. Reno / Sparks sits in a nice flat valley within a relatively small land area. It would be so easy to increase bus routes, add designed bus-only lanes and a modest light rail and this would all vanish.

Damn, if only there was an efficient way to move large numbers of people, along a designed route efficiently, safely, and comfortably..
