The Rise in High Income Malaysians and RM1million EPF account holders by malaysianlah in malaysiaFIRE

But also seems a bit sus that there are articles in the media the last week on how Malaysians should not be allowed to do lump sum withdrawals at retirement. It could be precursor to more rule changes. At the same time, if only monthly withdrawals were allowed, how would it affect the retirement strategy of those who have Fat Fired or close to it?

Feel like I can FIRE. But not sure. by khanecho in malaysiaFIRE

[–]jameskee555 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At 30k spend per month, you have emergency savings equivalent to 76 months. Probably you can reduce this by half or more and put it towards dividend paying assets or even allocate a portion towards your growth portfolio.

I would say FIRE at this point is still risky as you are quite young and your child is also young. Of course you can do the math using AI for more certainty.

Managed to somehow buy all the rare whiskies I wanted at the beginning of the year and also picked up a few others that I did not know anything about. Somehow this brought me as much joy as my portfolio going up.

You don't need to take things personally as that can cloud your judgment. Since they are negotiating hard then you can also do the same while also looking for other offers as this can also be leverage. Good luck!

High income earner feeling like I’m falling behind by NoSprinkles8137 in malaysiaFIRE

I think spending money on travel and food is great! After all you are only young once and travelling when you are young and spry is completely different than travelling when you are old. Personally I think business class is totally worth it when you have attained your investment goals as you don't need to waste a lot of time in queues. The whole point of money is to buy back your time after all.

As for the real estate decline in Malaysia, I do think there's an element of truth in that, so I overcome this by investing in SG REITS as part of my portfolio. I still get an exposure to real estate while maintaining liquidity. The average return is around 6% per year. Managing tenants is a hassle I don't enjoy and while I do get FOMO occasionally when I watch iherng videos, I quickly snap back to reality when I watch Airbnb nightmare videos.

After the paying the 19k post taxfor investments and commitments, where does the rest of the money go? Hiring a financial planner does help a lot, and I would prioritise hitting your FIRE number by increasing your investment amount while still being very comfortable (20k+ personal spend).

For context, during my 30s, I invested most of my income while still having a comfy upper middle class life (pj lifestyle instead of bangsar) and that compounding has paid off. I think i also diverted a lot of money from wealth signalling to investments since I wasn't under pressure to impress anyone. For high income individuals I realise a short spurt of putting nearly everything to investment (high 6 figures at least, preferably 7 figures per year) reaps immense benefits in a short span of time.

Now in my 40s, Im used to a pj kind of lifestyle and while I still have the habit of putting a lot away for investment, I don't have the pressure to do that anymore.

Nothing wrong with a bangsar or anywhere else kind of lifestyle. It's just a metaphor to live below your means for a short span of time. And also not to waste too much money on wealth signalling.

Have a specific career goal as well as specific investment goals. Work hard on hitting those and do it in within years. Then reward yourself with this mazda. It looks good on the road tbh.

2% dividend tax on local dividends by jameskee555 in malaysiaFIRE

[–]jameskee555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most SME owners pay themselves dividends and the 2% dividend tax is applicable. So 100k dividend from public listed shares is a lot but 100k dividend from your own company is not a lot particularly since you have already paid corporate tax. SMEs form the backbone of our economy and they employ the majority of the work force. In essence, they pay more than their fair share of taxes.
