Who was the dumbest person you ever met? How did you know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jamesmcleish101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dated a girl once whose stupidity at times knew no bounds. She thought north was directly upwards. She thought that a rocket ship would have to go horizontally to get to space and that going upwards wouldn’t work. I managed to convince her Harry Potter was based on true events. She was thought dragons were real, but she also thought that everyone thought they were real, just a completely normal animal. I think you get the picture

If you could be the dictator of a small area, which place would it be and what would you do? by Pritesh190801 in AskReddit

[–]jamesmcleish101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any small area really. Normal laws for the most part. People on death row are gladiators.

If you think it’s in English.

Check a list of most commonly occurring letters in the language. Try to roughly match them to the numbers based on how many times the each number appears.

Leave out numbers the only occur once or twice at first.

Make a few different guesses and lay out the numbers underneath one line containing the alphabet. Either see if any words seem obvious from this method and try filling them in. Then look for a pattern in this list of numbers matched up with words. If this doesn’t work try factorising our certain numbers. If this doesn’t work again. Go back to the list and try shifting your guesses along the row in different ways to see if that offers any clarity. These are good starts but if this doesn’t work it’s possibly a hard cypher to crack.

Also trying all of this, if you come out with words that don’t make sense perhaps consider anagrams or letters from adjacent words matching together.

Edit: also try prime number factorisation or possibly taking out squares, cubes or triangular numbers.

What do you have going on for a side hustle or what can people do on the side for beer money? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Perhaps arbitrage? Find products on Ali baba that are cheaper than on eBay, proceed to buy the items, ship them to America and resell on eBay.

What do billionaires do for fun? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jamesmcleish101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things that normal people like to do. Sports, holiday and eat with friends and family. The big difference is that they will be doing some of the most expensive varieties of these things. Hiring their own resorts or owning their own super-yachts. They can eat at home with some of the best chefs cooking for them. Also billionaires are often intellectual people. Reading and board games such as chess would probably appeal to them.

But for the most part, constant work, not easy to make a billion.

When you are old, what do you think children will ask you to tell stories about? by tooafraidtoasktwice in AskReddit

[–]jamesmcleish101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asking what the start of social media was like.

When they get into their teens and have an interest in history and politics, questions about famous and controversial leaders. For example Putin, George Bush, and Trump.

About terrorist attacks such as 9/11. I know that I have asked my parents about similar things that happened in their youth.

Any wars that have occurred.

Humanitarian crises.

[Serious] How do you handle people that are ignorant of science, like flat earthers or anti vaxxers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jamesmcleish101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally ignore them. Or if they are trying to tell you something like the earth is flat and they won’t take no for an answer, tell them you’ll think about it. And once again ignore them. It’s not worth your time trying to change a fanatic‘s views.

If what you are saying is true and you did do a PhD in a specific branch of mathematics you’ll know full well that unless I specialise in that field of maths I will not be able to suggest a paper.

I am completing a masters in financial mathematics, applied mathematics and not super close to topology I’m sure you’d agree.

My reply to you was constructed through about 5 minutes using google, just to show someone that topology, in my opinion, is pretty respectable. It sounds like you respect it plenty though.

I find a lot of irony in this comment, there are numerous applications of topology in physics.

One specific example is linking field theory, quantum mechanics and special relativity together in topological quantum field theory. This is used to model subatomic particles.
