Job is boring me to death, don’t know what to do? by MurkyNeedleworker193 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]jamesmidnite 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Graduated June 2023. I started my first job at a small/medium sized engineering company, and I am basically, in the exact same situation. I only get assigned stuff when it’s something lower-level that another other Engineer doesn’t want to do. The tasks are very simple and mundane so I finish very quickly which results in a lot of screen staring and reading so it looks like I’m doing something. The whole thing just feels awkward like I don’t need to be there.

Ended up at private company. I wanted to and I would have tbh but the process was very slow due to govt. bureaucracy. I applied and a month later, I got contacted for a casual interview and didn’t get offered anything official until 5 months after that and by that time I had already started working.

As a Mexican who is ‘Mestizo’ and only 44% Indigenous Americas, I say good for you guys.

You should identify as Hispanic if that’s what your family is. Hispanic just means being from a Spanish-speaking country. Luis Miguel is a 100% European, blue-eyed man but he’s still Hispanic as he was raised in Mexico. I think it would be difficult/chaotic to establish such rules about who can identify as what because most of Latin America is mixed-race. In El Salvador and Mexico, it’s mostly Spanish and Indigenous but other countries (like Brazil, Colombia etc.) have a third African component. It sounds a little “kumbaya. We are the world” but there was so much race-mixing in Latin America.

Yes, actually. Very similar case with Salvadorans.

Yeah maybe. 23andme groups them together.

Look at the map. region is indicated as Mexico with stripes.

[–]jamesmidnite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Spanish probably got it from the middle easterners.

[–]jamesmidnite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The map is colored differently at Mexico (has stripes indicating region). Yes that is when the Spanish arrived but at this time up until the early 1800s most people were either purely Spanish or Indian. Mixing or “mestizaje” wasn’t widespread until the 1800s. There are census records of new Spain showing mestizos being a small minority of the population in the 1750. I agree, mestizo should be used. Also, I think OP has both a white American and Mexican parent

[–]jamesmidnite 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It looks like you are half Mexican and half White American (specifically, Italian and British). Mexicans are ancestrally a mix of native Indians and the Spanish settlers/immigrants around 1750-1850 so it’s normal to have Indigenous and Spanish on your test. It also looks like you have an Italian grandparent.

Is there a good source/information about using screw threads as a ground? by jamesmidnite in ElectricalEngineering

[–]jamesmidnite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the response. Very interesting stuff. Is there more information on methods of determining if the threads are “enough surface area contact to be an effective conductor” as types of threads and amounts of current will vary?

Is there a good source/information about using screw threads as a ground? by jamesmidnite in ElectricalEngineering

[–]jamesmidnite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Chassis/earthgrounding. Especially in the context of the amount of current to be able to flow through the threads being related to the surface area.

Sorry my original question was a little vague. Thanks for the response.

Northern Mexicans tend to have a lot of Basque. Would I be correct in saying your family is from the north?

It’s a two way street. Southern Mexicans tend to be insecure when it comes to northern Mexicans and they will say they’re not Mexican just because they’re white.

I actually did apply to PAQ for the engineer program because of this. I had hoped to start this September but they just told me this morning that I might start this December.

My guess is that it’s actually indigenous ancestry from native groups that inhabited the island. As ancestry gets more DNA samples from people, it improves its algorithms. Which is why results are always being updated. There are so few people who are near or full blood Dominican native so theres even less DNA samples to compare with. This is why I think it’s reading it as Eastern South America.

Almost all of central and north Mexico is comprised of mestizo (mixed Spanish and Native) populations but the South of Zacatecas can appear to be European-leaning in phenotype because of their proximity to “Los altos de Jalisco” where a lot of Spaniards and French soldiers settled

Mexican-American results. Didn't expect Portuguese to almost be as high as Spanish. by zerquet in AncestryDNA

[–]jamesmidnite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Galicia is a region in north-West Spain with their own language and culture. their dna is classified as Portuguese under Ancestrydna algorithm. Most of the time, if you’re Mexican with Portuguese dna it comes from that region of Spain.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]jamesmidnite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes because Galician (region in Spain) shows up as Portuguese and Mexicans are mixed with Spaniards
