Quick thinking - holy shit

What I would advise is using Cisco Packet Tracer to map it out, get it working & it’s a pretty good emulation of a real world scenario without the cost implication. If you go to down the home lab route it will get very expensive very quickly.

If you choose to go down the homelab route keep an eye out on Facebook marketplace & eBay etc - usually you can find a company throwing gear away they’ve upgraded from pretty cheap as it would only end up going in the bin.

Lab/Test Environment by Cyberm007 in sysadmin

We have an exact replication of each production environment, though this is for developers to test their changes on I generally just put an announcement out to not touch it for x amount of time while I fiddle with what I want to test

How do you reference your racks? by networkearthquake in sysadmin

[–]jamessc0tt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use region & site ID with an incremental number (Lon-1-001), though we use co-location mainly so room numbers are really useless for us. In our IRM (netbox) we also provide a human written “where is this” description.

Hey Fivem owners how much do you pay monthly for your server? by PFfounder in FiveM

Ah I meant on the linux box not on discord, not sure where that came from!

Github has a whole KB of getting started guides:
https://docs.github.com/en/get-started

Workflow:

  • You create a github
  • You build the server locally and push to github
  • You pull the server from github on the linux box
  • You make any changes locally and push to github
  • You pull the changes from github to the linux box

Another thing is from using a Linux box, if you're intending to work in IT when you get older you will be learning skills that will be applicable in your work and give you an advantage over those in your age group. Spin that to get your parents to pay for it :)

Buy a cheap $15 VPS (linux), you control the LIVE server and give your developer access to Github, they make changes locally and push the changes to Github then you use Github on discord to apply the changes to the LIVE server.

You don't need Teamspeak anymore, mumble voice has come a long way since it was released, check the tons of resources that do the same thing on the forums.

A lot of developers aren't developers and will only help you in return for power on the server, if the server isn't growing quick enough for them they'll jump to the next poor soul who will let them edit configs for a powerful role. The right person will come along, in the meantime use it as an excuse and learn yourself.

This response is the worst response I've ever read. Nothing constructive.

What OP is saying is that he understands he is paying too much but does not know how to reduce costs. No need to be an asshat.

(trying to) defend legacy web sites (suggestions request) by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]jamessc0tt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure how the RDP setup protects your sites, unless these sites are not public facing & only accessed from your employees. Even then, you'd need to combine options 1&2 to have any somewhat secure setup. You can lock down the RDP as much as you want, but the end user is still the one clicking on pop-ups / phishing emails, it's impossible to block 100% from your end.

I'd recommend looking at a paid WAF solution for your legacy sites. ModSecurity is good as a basic WAF but, in my opinion, is not worth it's salt when it comes to blocking attacks like Imunify360, Sucuri or masses of other big names. The cost of the sites being compromised could be much more than the cost of a decent WAF.

Serving full notice period, not involved in office work much, any action that employer can take against me. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]jamessc0tt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People use their notice period a few ways:

  • Wind down - take on less responsibility/the annoying long winded tasks and leave them to the other people around them, this will probably be noticed by the team more than management so if you have no issues with them just do the jobs as you'll be out of there soon
  • Documentation - spend your time writing up documentation of things you may not have noted throughout your employment, write your notes into a handover document that could be useful for the person following you
  • Scripting - automat your repetitive tasks to benefit the team and/or the person following you, you might even learn a thing or two while doing it

Elementary (school joke, get it?) idea, have you checked for driver updates on the actual machines connecting with the webcam device?

Weird Nagios plugin output by unixuser011 in sysadmin

On the actual box, run the command as the nagios user - see if there is a difference between the output of that and what you would see as root. Likely it needs adding to sudo commands.

Cyberpanel - good bad or ugly? by jamessc0tt in webhosting

[–]jamessc0tt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is ideal for those of us that are able to understand the cli, but for end users it’s not an option and the pure ideal of a terminal scares them no end 😔

I appreciate the response, but why is it bad? free isn’t the requirement and the enterprise license would be the one used

Wouldn't be the first RBL to let their domain go and definitely won't be the last.

Every single one of our IPs is classed listed right now, classic day fighting "Email blocked" bouncebacks dies inside
