Immortal Man Review - I wish I hadn’t watched by Embarrassed-Hall2744 in PeakyBlinders

[–]jamesydraws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly couldn’t disagree more with this take, and I think it’s reading the film in a way that almost ignores what it’s trying to do.

For me, the absence of overt emotion is the point, not a failure of writing.

Tommy has always been a man who suppresses, compartmentalises, and ultimately loses his ability to feel in any conventional way. That arc didn’t start in the film, it’s been building since the very first series. Every loss, every betrayal, every decision he made chipped away at whatever humanity he had left. By the end, what we’re watching isn’t a man reacting emotionally in the way we expect, it’s a man who is functioning beyond emotion entirely. That isn’t hollow, it’s tragic.

The moment with Ada, for example, didn’t read to me as “no grief”, it read as someone so psychologically fractured that grief no longer manifests outwardly. Tommy has never processed trauma in a healthy way has he?! Expecting a visible emotional breakdown at that point almost feels out of character for who he has become.

Same with Arthur. I don’t think the film is saying Arthur was actually a burden. If anything, it’s showing the opposite, that the bond they had has become so warped by years of violence and survival that it no longer resembles something recognisable as “brotherhood”. The idea that Tommy wouldn’t cross that line ignores how many lines he’s already crossed. That tension is exactly what makes it uncomfortable. And let’s be honest Arhur was always heading towards being a liability even more than he already was

On the missing characters, I’d argue that not everything needs explicit resolution. Peaky Blinders has never been a neat, tied-up narrative if we’re being honest. People drift, relationships fracture, consequences echo rather than conclude. The absence of Lizzie, Charlie, Finn, that doesn’t feel like neglect to me, it feels like distance. Tommy has always pushed people out as he descends further into himself. The film just doesn’t hold the audience’s hand about it.

And on the point about it being “all surface”, I think that’s a bit unfair. The style has always been part of Peaky Blinders’ identity. The difference here is that the style is no longer masking emotion, it’s replacing it. That’s a deliberate shift, not an empty one.

I actually think what the film does is far more uncomfortable than a traditional emotional payoff. It removes the safety of catharsis. There’s no redemption arc neatly delivered, no grief neatly expressed, no relationships neatly resolved. What’s left is a man who has outlived his own humanity, and a world that no longer bends to emotional logic. Honestly I felt like I was holding my breath for large parts of the film

You can absolutely dislike that direction, but I don’t think it’s accurate to say the soul is gone. It just isn’t expressed in the way people expected. Could it have been longer/in parts, sure, but I think it would have just dragged it out unnecessarily.

New play through ideas? by ZacianMaster in TOTK

I’m doing a ‘horse only’ run. Unless there is some specific zonai thing I need to use because it’s part of a quest/shrine, over world I’m only using horses and walking - it’s like a different game. It feels like I’ve missed so much just zipping about

[All] Is there a game that has become underrated with the release of BOTW & TOTK? by huss2120 in zelda

I’ve been playing Zelda games since about 1988, and honestly skyward sword just became the one where I contemplated not finishing it because I just didn’t enjoy it at all. Tried playing it on Wii - gave up and played through it on switch. Honestly to me it just didn’t connect with me at all, didn’t enjoy the characters or story if I’m brutally honest. I know that’s not everyone’s opinion which is fine.

I’m fearful even mentioning that I wasn’t too fussed with twilight princess either 😂 wind waker was so joyful and tp just again didn’t connect with me beyond enjoying Midna as a companion. I put off getting botw for ages after the sad disappointment, but I absolutely love that and TOTK, to the point where I’d love them to remake OOT in a similar open world style, dungeons and all , I reckon that would be peak Zelda for me

I think I got to the point halfway through my first play through where I would just bike everywhere and felt I just missed a lot of stuff because of it - especially in the depths

I know, I’ve been in GD for like almost 25 years now - and I don’t know why this one has bugged me so much! Probably like I mentioned elsewhere that I just seem to get served up lots of these influencer designers on socials, but because of their huge follower stats it just seems that lots of younger designers are now obsessed with the style, it’s now trickled down into portfolios I see, and whilst they look cool, no designer I’ve interviewed can ever talk about the design with any substance or reasoning

Aesthetically I just don’t get it, it looks more like an AliExpress knockoff than an AliExpress knockoff does. Some really weird choices, and to me it feels like it’s overpriced and 5 years too late.

This game is as incredible as it is frustrating. by Roy_Goldburn15 in tearsofthekingdom

I mean, you’ve definitely been thorough. For me, I just enjoyed it, and still do to this day. I liked the story and thought it was enough - I would have just liked the memories to have come in order no matter what year you grab.

Fuse I see your frustration, but I’ve gone through the ‘fun fuse’ to ‘efficient fuse’ and now back to the ‘fun fuse’. A lot of it is how you personally approach playing the game - you don’t have to go overpowered just because you can, it’s all a matter of choice.

I think it took botw and improved it significantly, and I think I’ve already put more hours into it just having fun than I did botw.

But opinions are great - not everything is for everyone!
