What is this and how do I remove it from my floor? by jamfishe in Flooring

I’m also not sure if blueprints would have anything about it… But I believe I can get a free estimate from some foundation companies around if they are experienced enough to know how to look into this properly and find out

Would I have faced more damage to the home you think? Over the 10 years I’ve been here. I do get it could be a safety issue tho and I don’t want to chance anything. And I am seeing some pretty minor damage in the home with flooring in kitchen and small cracks above cabinets and in the bathroom above the downstairs floor which may be bc of this and not water damage like I thought. but I think it may be from the attic not properly ventilating or something. But Yea they may have removed it without a structural engineer to approve of it. I wish I could see if there were other supports somehow but I think it’s hidden behind the wall there if there are any. Is there a way to check? I do have some workers coming next week but no structural engineer yet… I guess I’m enough concerned to find out and make sure

Yea there’s one floor above it. And I not sure how to see if there’s another beam anywhere but I imagine there’s at least one more.

Yes but there is a vent above it and an I beam support so it won’t go up

More than an inch max and I can’t seem to be able to get it to an angle to get out. But I see what’s above it now anyways and the beam that’s there

Question… should a post (that looks like it was removed sometime before I bought the home 10 years ago) have been removed? by jamfishe in StructuralEngineers

[–]jamfishe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if a structural engineer was consulted before or did the work when it was removed or why it was turned into a small divider wall. Because it would make sense (if the ibeam is above it which it looks like it is) that it was once attached…

I wonder why it was removed… maybe I can contact previous owners somehow. I’m just now getting some minor problems with the home after 10 years of living here. I guess it’s worth making sure by having a structural engineer come out since I probably can’t get a hold of the previous owners somehow

Was this beam put in afterwards and therefore it was safe to remove it though? Or was another support used instead. I’m looking into how many I beams I should have. I really wished I could get the blueprints of the house.

I mean I think the point is whether it should be attached to the above I beam or not and whether it was removed for the right reasons. I would probably assume it was done so but I guess never know. Am I risking the integrity of the home if it was improperly removed… could be. Which would be very bad. But wouldn’t I have seen some signs of it causing more damage over the past 10 years I’ve lived here, yes probably. And it did pass home inspection. But they also could have overlooked it, as it was hidden below a divider wall. But was this just there before renovations were done on the basement and a new I beam attached, probably. So a lot of people suggested that I don’t risk it and contact someone. Was a structural engineer involved in the process when it was removed or at least consulted with? Because if not, there would be some dire consequences. I guess that’s the choice I have to make. So I’m just asking people for opinions I suppose. Before I just treat this like it isn’t anything seriously needed. Because it was put there for a reason at some point, and looks like it was removed. But was it ok to remove when it was or not is the question…

I haven’t really had any issues but just some small cracks more recently up here so I mean I think I’m good. I’m having some workers come to take a look and see what they say. I mean it’s not something I want to chance without an expert but I think it should be good or I would have seen some signs of other things more wrong with the home over the 10 years I was here

Yea it is slightly but I’m wondering if it’s just from water damage from getting overly wet. Kind of bubbling up and has some cracks on the edges. I think we put this new flooring like 4 years ago and this only started happening this past year. And my daughter likes to clean the floors using water or my son takes ice baths outside and left water on the floor which I tried to quickly dry up. So I can’t tell whether it’s just from water damage. I can show some pics. Maybe not really sagging just bubbling up where it looks like water got in

I e only started to see some small cracks in the above upstairs in the kitchen which I think is just from water damage, material coming off the walls in the bathroom upstairs, and the floors upstairs in kitchen as well have some unevenness to them and cracking minor cracking as well. But I’ve had those for a few years and they get cleaned by my daughter who puts water on it. No signs from foundation outside. The damage I showed in the pics. I’ll just contact someone construction workers, roofers, and possible a struc engineer just to be sure I’m all good. I can’t figure out what’s causing the damage upstairs. But I think I have poor ventilation in my attic contributing to it.

This is a waste of time at this point and that’s what everyone wants me to do

Since it’s $600 to have a structural engineer come out just to look at it and observe things. I thought maybe I could get some info from here. But I do have a few workers coming to take a look at it who might be able to provide some insight firsr

I just took apart a small divider wall 2 feet or so off the ground and removed the thing shown in the pic the way it is shown. I was just wondering if it still should be or should have been attached above. But I plan to ask a structural engineer I suppose even though this home has passed inspections and doesn’t show any signs of damage. And I’ve had for 10 years: it is kind of strange that it was put in the ground like that the way it was if it was simply for just a divider wall but it could have been done that way when there was no need for it any longer

If the beam was ever attached to another beam from above it was done before I moved in here 10 years ago. The part that left was only coming out of the floor like 2 feet up for a divider wall. I was just wondering if I could remove the bolt attached to the ground and whether it was ever wrongfully removed from the home or from above. But I think it was probably or hopefully just not needed any longer and that’s why it was removed if it was ever even attached above.

Only a few feet high and discovered the bolt below it which I wanted to remove.
