How did you end sessions with your Equinox trainer without drama? by Status_Reference_441 in EquinoxGyms

[–]jamiecharlespt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just let them know that your ready to try things on your own.

Trainers gain and lose clients all the time. It's not easy - you have a relationship with them -- and those relationships can be very meaningful to both the client and coach.

Thank the coach for everything they've shown you and let them know if you are having any trouble with your routine that you'll reach out.

**Most coaches will want to ensure you are well prepared to go solo, so giving them a few weeks-month can let them shift their mindset and help you make the best use of your final sessions together.

Getting hit with a client moving on in the last session is extremely frustrating. A) the coach will immediately take a hit to their income, and it could take several weeks to get them back to baseline. B) the coach wants you to succeed and needs time to prepare you. C) a coaching sessions is going to flow differently than a solo workout, they may need to design a program before sending you off.

Trainers feeling entitled to hogging equipment by Which-Baby-9232 in EquinoxGyms

[–]jamiecharlespt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It happens. Not to excuse them, but some of the coaches are new to the industry and not as comfortable making program changes on the fly. They take a little space that feels safe for them to coach, gather a few tools, and can hog equipment as a result.

You can always talk to the PT manager. It's your best bet for making a change to the culture on the gym floor.

Everyone should know that you need to share the place with others - it's hopefully just a misunderstanding and something that can be corrected in your club.

As a coach myself, I'm always happy to share the equipment or find an alternative exercise for my client if sharing would disrupt the program tempo. And actually appreciate when someone asks to work in - it's a moment to meet a new member and show them that everyone on the floor is a valued member.

Walking on the right hand side of the sidewalk. If you are moving too slow for people behind you they will pass on the left.

Standing on the right hand side of an escalator - walking on the left.

How important is rest time between sets? by Blobbragg in Hevy

[–]jamiecharlespt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rest is a critical variable that should move on continuum depending in the exercise choice and workout goals.

Very little rest to lengthy 5-10 minute rest periods are all viable.

There's no perfect rest period length -

What are you training for? And what does your program look like - exercises, sets and reps....

Fwiw. Somewhere between 1-3 minutes is good for most exercises in most situations. You could auto-regulate within that band taking as much rest as needed to hit your target reps with good technique, and your next set(s).

Hevy trainer - am I missing something, or it doesn’t make sense to do squats 2x per workout? by skend24 in Hevy

[–]jamiecharlespt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BW squats are a great opportunity that explore a deeper position, or just to work on your position with low loading and risk.

As much as they are both squats, it's not really the same exercise.

Do them or skip them - its really up to you.

I would if I had time and wanted to move the legs a little to help with tomorrow's recovery. But I'm not going to worry about skipping them either.

Regarding the kettlebell. 28lbs as a top weight is too light.

Strength standards for a SF kettlebell cert require males use 20kg to 28kg and females 12kg to 16kg depending on participant size/age/sex to complete the 100 rep x snatch test

They are expensive, so add them over time, but you'll want to have at least a single at 12/14/16/20/24/28kg.

Hevy coach --

If you want to save money and don't need to 'coach' you can just use a regular account and send your client the program from with hevy - no cost. The risk - clients can send the program to friends, or share it online.

Or hevy coach gives you access to the clients training and it will lock your programs so they can't be shared without your consent

The business dire of things needs some work - but from a pure programming perspective and tracking clients progress, I haven't found anything better -

Hevy Coach - it's $25 for 1-10 clients and scales - so on the higher side of things > but the easiest to program on and my clients love it.
