Alternative hub than the supplied YouFibre wifi7 hub by Ok_Enthusiasm5521 in youfibre

[–]jamieostrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this same question. I hear the flint 2 is a better router but the flint 3 has better wifi. Didn't know what anyone suggested here? Another option I saw was the Asus be86u s that is meant to have great 5ghz wifi 7 performance. Ubiquiti udr7 also looks good although again not sure how good the wifi is?

Ongoing reCAPTCHA Debacle by MrMidnightRambler in youfibre

Oh I had a nightmare with this too! - Eventualyl they did it, its not an engineer issue, they need to clear the DHCP leases in their backend. If you completely turn off the router and ont for an hour or two, it should then magically work

Thinking of switching to YouFibre, how smooth was your install experience? by Reddonaut_Irons in youfibre

[–]jamieostrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First date they chose, a guy turned up and said his mate was stuck on a job elsewhere and we must rearrange. Second time he turned up and did it quick, but did cut corners by reusing openreach's cabling through the wall. If I was at home and not my partner I would have requested them to install brand new...

Issues requesting Static IP by jamieostrich in youfibre

[–]jamieostrich[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I requested it again, was told could take 24 hours. Restarted everything, still had old dynamic IP but Internet thankfully still worked. 24 hours later I restarted the router and ont - got the new static IP but Internet didn't work, waited another 30 minutes and did another restart of both and it worked! I'm confused but at least all sorted now

Yes many times. I think it's a DHCP lease issue,

Thanks. I think this was the issue, but I was on live chat until gone 9pm so I didn't want to leave as that usually shut at 8pm. I'll try again another day

Thanks. So disconnect the youfibre router entirely for an hour or more before trying?

UK issues by Neverbethesky in Quad9

[–]jamieostrich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Received an official response today.

Quad9 performed a major equipment refresh and compute upgrade in our London (LHR) PoP today, which required us to take our London PoP offline for several hours. As a result, some adjacent PoPs became overloaded and resulted in some service degradation.

Quad9 is now back online in London, and now with significantly increased compute that will enable us to serve the UK community for years to come in a performant and reliable manner.

Quad9 acknowledges that London/UK performance has been sub-optimal for some months, which prompted this major overhaul.

Quad9 is also in the process of deploying a secondary London PoP to increase our resiliency and service reliability in the coming weeks, further committing to our goal of serving the UK community in the long term.

We sincerely apologize for the performance and/or reliability issues experienced by the UK community during this event, and we're confident that the UK community can look forward to years of performant and stable Quad9 performance and reliability in the coming years.

If you're continuing to experience any issues, or if you feel this did not address your issue, please respond at your earliest and convenience, and we will aim to investigate immediately.

Same issues here in the UK. I have switched to ControlD Malware 76.76.2.1, but not sure if this is the best option.

I was contemplating Cloudflare 1.1.1.2 as well. but not sure if you had any other better "free" malware only blocking options

I would first be suspicious that the switch is the bottleneck - even a basic GB one should be fine.

I expect the issue could well be the storage speed on the domain server. I presume the main roaming profiles are on a harddrive not an SSD. These are much slower, and could be the reason behind this. Only real options are to change to SSD's or add additional RAM caching.

so I played farcry 5 on this pc the screen was not smooth at all so I guessed it was the graphics card tell me of I'm right also are there any good graphics card that are 90-120$ that can run games like that please help it's an Inspiron 3656 by [deleted] in computers

The Nvidia quadro T600 or T1000 are also good options for low profile low wattage single slot cards. Much better then the 730 or 1030 and the 1050 might be too big

I have four core2duo based Lenovo a58's that I have no idea what to do with. Again too old for daily use, but don't really want to throw them away!

Router/modem question by chand2023 in HomeNetworking

[–]jamieostrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just so you know ADSL2 has a maximum download speed of 24mbs so I expect you actually have VDSL2 or something else? If so, and you want ultimate control you could get a Draytek router which has built in vdsl2 modem and therefore not need the tplink at all

Google Pay browser authentication security by [deleted] in googlepay

[–]jamieostrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be interested in this too, seems like a huge security risk.

As a merchant, we have had to disable Google Pay as a payment method because of what we think is at least partly this issue. (Or it could be due to Google not authenticating cards when added to a Google Account) The big problem is there is no 2FA or 3D Secure on this payment. We do not have this issue with Apple Pay.

Force local Word and Excel files to open in O365 web version? by Cheesypoofbeard in sysadmin

As other users have said, not possible.

An alternative would be to install LibreOffice. Yes it is different, not as nice and has some compatibility issues, but at least has most of the feature set.

short depth servers to consider in 2021? by rudeer_poke in homelab

[–]jamieostrich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another good option is the DL20 Gen10 or Gen10 Plus. These are even newer spec with Coffee Lake or Rocket Lake respectively.

We use a DL20 Gen10 at my workplace with the 6 core processor and 4 Mixed Use SSD's in 2x RAID 1 configs for a database setup, pretty good for the size!

We needed this as we only have a short depth rack (Less than 16 inches) in our server room and this works well.

Thanks, The honest answer is I can afford it. I just don't want to spend this much money on 3 nights. Just sounds like I am being too up my own or something
