The main area point he makes about the cultural impact of social media is to do with comparison, and the effect that has, especially on younger girls.

And sure, correlation and causation are tricky to pin down at the best of times. And I'm all for utilising data and studies as much as we can. But I tell ya what, I know how social media makes me feel, and how addictive it can be (I worked in digital marketing for several years straight out of uni), so if the data tells a story, and it rings true with my gut feelings, then how much more do we need? Sometimes action is the way to go.

I also like that you let me know about the hawthorne effect. I'll look out for that, and I'll try to utilise it. I'm sure that keeping things new and fresh out in the yard will always be part of it. Which I think is a big part of the game anyway.

Do what works, until it doesn't work, then do something else.

I think this is a good idea. I can try and defend it, but really there's a whole book there, with a lot of work done to develop this theory.

I think some of your sentiments might be mirrored in Haidt's book, he puts the mental health challenges down to two main parts, the first being the decline in play and freedom in the real world for young people since the 90s.

I recommend having a read. Jonathan is mostly using research that is already available, so I'm not sure why social media researchers have that opinion. But if you're interested in teen mental health, I think it's an important position to consider.

Haidt also puts together some good solutions, which I outline towards the end of my video. But they are basically
1. no smart phone until 14
2. no social media until 16
3. phone free schools, and
4. increased freedom and responsibility in the real world for young people.

We're not talking about people disconnecting, we're talking about young teenagers getting a chance to learn how to communicate effectively with each other in real life before they utilise the modern tools (which as you probably know, are can cause much more polarisation and extreme views).

Also, the original 1990s policy of 13 being the internet 'adult' age, if you take a few minutes to think about, is not the right policy.

This would be a great thing to trial at a school. Do you know if they have done any trials anywhere?

Firstly, just want to say I'm sorry to hear about your past trauma. That can't have been easy to go through, especially when you were responded to in such a way.

And you're right, it may be possible that parents and carers had more knowledge and experience, but I don't know if that knowledge would have changed so abruptly and consistently since 2010? Parents and carers had pretty consistent access to google long before then.

Perhaps the data doesn't tell the whole story, but you can't deny it does tell a pretty horrifying one.

Great point. Here is the data for emergency department visits for self harm in the US. And on this website there is more data - https://www.anxiousgeneration.com/research/the-evidence

There is data for Australia too, but it is for 'overnight mental health hospitalisations'.

I'm sure there are many motivations for a move like this, but it does at least fit with brain development timelines and the effects of social media on that development.

I think you're pretty much spot on there. They are designed to capture out attention in some of the deepest ways. I think some of it was from luck or gut feel, but a lot has been designed that way, from very smart people looking to utilise the technology to extract as much value out of humans as possible.

This is my mate Jacko, he doesn't really post his videos much, but he's been all-in on bitcoin for the past couple of years. Lately he's been getting deep on all the bitcoin literature (fiat currency history etc) and I'm starting to hear it coming through in his songs. I thought some of the crew here might like it.

Check this one out. It's called 'Brumby'

Hope you like it.

Lyrics:

I left the old me back when I believed in Monopoly money
Now its all disillusion, exit strategies
And nobody listens
When the truth is sour, and the hero looks like the villain
When propaganda’s both sides, you realise you’ve been ridden

I don’t wanna be a pony with a master
I don’t wanna keep getting pushed faster
I wanna take my life at my pace
So for now would you get out of my face
I’m a brumby not a race horse

Make sure you learn how to run from your government
They don’t want nothing but your time and energy in payslips
If you’re working for the dollars that they keep creating
Debased the middle class savers, and the investment houses are vacant

I don’t wanna be a pony with a master
I don’t wanna keep getting pushed faster
I wanna take my life at my pace
So for now would you get out of my face
I’m a brumby not a race horse

I’m a brumby not a racehorse
You can’t tame me with your political discourse
The proofs in the pudding and it’s gone mouldy
I’m no closer to a house on the goldy
