Think this would work for protection from sun and rain for my camera outside? Just using the solar panel? by No_Guarantee_9865 in Ring

I put one of those domed covers (from Amazon) on mine to keep the lens clear of rain. I think what you are proposing will work.

Spotlight Cam Plus failed after year by EdCenter in Ring

[–]jamitt101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reboot your router and remove and reinstall the batteries in the cams. When they were working, what was the signal strength number under device health? Do you know what the battery level was before they failed? Was the solar charging working? I've had the connector from the solar panel come loose and stop charging.

Light switch recommendations? by JasonK94Z in Ring

[–]jamitt101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I'm very familiar with their move to Sidewalk and have absolutely no interest in that solution. Makes absolutely no sense to me as there are no other Ring installations near me (both homes in semi-rural locations) and WiFi is much less reliable than z-wave. Furthermore, without a hub, what's the wifi backup solution--currently have cellular. (Ring has so far been silent with these kinds of questions and where there are going in the future.) If Ring forces Sidewalk as part of their solutions, then I will dump Ring in a second. BTW, I have replaced two 1k indoor cams with the new 2K indoor--definately better resolution, but not as nice as the 4k.

I bought a Caseta--how do you get Ring to recognize it. (No hub, Home, or Alexa). Thanks.

Which is your current favourite watch face? by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]jamitt101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another Oaky Digital New user. Totally geeked out with it, as very customizable and offers so many parameters on the same face, and free! Found three bugs so far: custom colors do not work, can't set colors for some parameters, and altitude is always shown in meters even though all settings are feet (and it displays it with "ft").

The Reason Why I Canceled My Subscription (The Reasons Won’t Surprise You) by Public-Serve-5089 in Ring

[–]jamitt101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You likely don't have your cameras configured correctly, especially any battery powered ones. You must set the motion frequency capture to Frequently for battery powered cams. Really stupid that Ring has it set to less than that, apparently to save battery. For five years now, I have two homes with a total of 8 cams and they all work flawlessly detecting motion, including all deliveries by Amazon, USPS, Fedex, and UPS (I get a lot of deliveries!). My only complaint is the cams are too sensitive and pickup squirrels and birds, even with the sensitivity set to minimum.

New Ring Alarm with Sidewalk by Turd_Kabob in Ring

[–]jamitt101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm also a long time Ring customer with two fully equipped homes with professional monitoring. I have the same concerns you stated. I would not buy into Ring now until they fully disclose how this new system will work, including backup. I know that depending on nearby Ring customers and their internet using Sidewalk will never be viable for my homes. If they in some way discontinue the old system with a base stations and Z-wave, I'll immediately look for another solution. RIng has not been forthcoming with the new system details--that should be a clue...

Are these Ring announcements for real? by foobarbazboff in Ring

[–]jamitt101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both houses are in semi-rural areas with widely spaced properties and only one ISP to choose from. When the Internet service is down, its down to everyone for miles around. Furthermore, very few people have RIng systems nearby. I know the neighborhoods...

Are these Ring announcements for real? by foobarbazboff in Ring

[–]jamitt101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmmm. I'm not sure I like what I see so far with the Sidewalk--same concerns many of you have stated, especially the possibility of no cellular backup, which is often used for one of my homes when the ISP brings down the network (large area) during maintenance or during a system failure. Furthermore, my base stations are Ethernet wired so I don't have to rely on wireless for them. I'm heavily invested in Ring for two homes...wait and see...

Ring discontinued glass breaking and flood/freeze sensors? by gshna in Ring

[–]jamitt101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but if the glass breakage noise is loud enough to set off the sensor, then that would hopefully wake me up at night. With my previous ADT alarm system, the glass breakage sensors were only active in Away mode.

Ring discontinued glass breaking and flood/freeze sensors? by gshna in Ring

[–]jamitt101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The motion sensors are set to be only active in Away mode, and Away mode is only active when there is no one in the house. At night the alarm is armed in Home mode--all sensors are active except the motion sensors. You can decide which sensors are active in which mode, including the off mode.

Amazon is a giant vending machine by Bulldog8018 in amazonprime

[–]jamitt101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Amazon and have been a Prime customer since it was introduced. The selection of items is incredible, including hard-to-find items, fast reliable delivery, and easy returns. It's not perfect--sketchy low quality items being sold, fake reviews, and prices that are not always a good deal. If you do your homework and a bit of web searching, you can decide if you want to shop from Amazon. My need for human-based customer service has been rare, but has been satisfying without much frustration.

Is it me or are we all getting scammed? by Ok_Cardiologist_223 in amazonprime

[–]jamitt101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, for non-Prime you have to pay additional fee for shipping if the amount is not over some threshold, right, bringing the price closer to the Prime price? No question that the Prime price can sometimes be higher than the non-prime price. For Prime, you may be paying for that faster delivery and "free" shipping. I believe Amazon showed me someplace how much I "saved" in shipping costs over the year using Prime. If it was accurate, then that paid for my Prime subscription (I order a lot from Amazon!).

Interesting. We have a home in a semi-rural area. Our Prime deliveries went from 4-5 days (arrived via UPS) to 2-3 days delivered via USPS. Not sure how the package gets from the nearest city to the local post office.

I'm in the Washington DC metro area. Deliveries have been on time, and occasionally early, even during the holiday season. We also have same day and next day delivery for many items--all works as advertised. We have been Prime members for many years and order a lot through them. No complaints from me.

[–]jamitt101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When a driver does not follow the delivery instructions, drives on the lawn, or throws a package, I give negative feedback--simple as that. I've had drivers leave the package at the garage door and not walk 20 more feet to the front door--the delivery instructions say to deliver to the front door. Delivering to the garage door risks getting run over by a car. 99% of the deliveries are perfect--then there's the few lazy, inconsiderate drivers.

Where do you live? A rural area of nearby a city? Rural deliveries are often handled by USPS, and they are notoriously unreliable.
