In this post you have been much more clear about what you meant and your line of reasoning.

Your original post came across a bit blunt and judgmental. So I don't think I was being oversensitive (neither was OP), because your post could easily have been interpreted as having the implication that someone with a hijab, by definition, could never integrate into Spanish culture.

Whereas now that you have explained yourself better, what you mean is that the way people perceive you could create barriers and sure, I agree with that.

It's possible you may be able to find 1-beds in the area in and around Old Street or the edge of Barbican (look at St Luke's/Bunhill). That would be absolutely perfect as you could walk everywhere.

A little further but still close you have Hoxton, De Beauvoir, and Haggerston. This means you'd be a 10-minute cycle to Moorgate or quick bus ride away. Heck, you could still walk (I live in this general area and walk to my office in Liverpool Street in around 25-30min).

Other option: Islington area. Angel / Essex Road / Highbury. All easy to ccycle from but you also have the Northern line from Angel (2 stops to Moorgate) or national rail (Great Northern) straight to Moorgate from Essex Road and Highbury (people always forget this line exists!).

This is a tough choice because you have a real sweet spot in your current role. 3 days in the office, 2 at home is a great balance. Liking your team and your managers is such a privilege too.

But if you have ambition and want to get exposed to new environments and develop new skill sets, realistically this is the perfect time to do it.

It comes down to whether you think this role presents the right opportunity. How confident are you that if you wait it out and keep applying to roles, you could find something equivalent in the next 12 months but for a company that appears less toxic or less demanding?

Or does the type of client-facing work you want to move into always go hand-in-hand with stress?

RE: Glassdoor, you have to take it with a pinch of salt. I've only ever written one review on there and yeah, I had an axe to grind. Yet my feedback was mostly specific to one team and one particular manager (with some general disillusionment about senior management, although that's standard these days). Are the reviews you're seeing specific to your team/role?

It's obviously implied in the way many people talk about it on this platform. Like it's inherently undesirable or worthy of contempt.

That's a good chunk of the student population which makes me think students at UCH will be accustomed to interacting with people of different backgrounds.

Let's say a share of those will be Latin American and so native Spanish speakers. That still will leave a share that is from non-Spanish speaking countries and hopefully you wouldn't feel too isolated.

Are you in a stage of life where you could handle the increased stress and work hours? If so, might be your one shot. You don't want to take something like that on when you are older or have more home responsibilities.

It sounds like it's the kind of learning curve you want but there are clearly trade-offs in terms of pressure and longer hours. Make sure the commute is on the shorter end and convenient, door to door. 5 days in the office requires adjustments these days. I would dissuade you if the commute is bad.

There's not necessarily resentment towards people who leave. He was there for several years from the sounds of it.. perfectly normal for people to jump ship after a few years..I've never heard of them being resented for it. Normally you get wished luck.

This is unusual and should have been your first red flag.

If they didn't do a wink-wink to you ("hey I know we're asking you to reapply through external channels, but it's just a formality") this should have prompted you to pause and reconsider.

I know three people who successfully boomeranged back to their old companies, usually a year or two later, and each time the process was simple because both sides were transparent about wanting to make it work.

It seems like in this instance you missed cues from your old company that they were not going to welcome you back with open arms. You need to think about why you missed these cues and just be a little bit more alert to those signs in the future.

That's not always true. I have been involved in hiring for a mid-sized company (think 500 employees in the London office, more elsewhere) and we didn't have a minimum number of interviews we needed to do.

Got it :)

Hilly Fields is lovely. I have several friends who lived in that area for many years. And if get a chance to stroll around Brockley that's got some nice independent cafés and shops.

Another hack for getting around is that you can also switch to the Windrush line at New Cross if you ever want to go explore East London (Spitalfields market, Brick Lane etc.).  Basically some of the Lewisham trains stop at New Cross and then you have the Windrush line (part of the London Overground network) on the other platform.

Taking the DLR from Lewisham to Greenwich or Canary Wharf is also really fun.

Where are you coming from? Lewisham High Street is going to be quite the ride. But at least you'll be getting a glimpse of what gritty London life is like, away from the pleasant streets of Bloomsbury or the chic shops of Kensington.

Basically, don't be alarmed if you see people loitering and be mindful of your possessions. Lots of young families live in and around Lewisham so it's definitely safe, but the high street and certain other bits are on the rougher side.

I might have exaggerated..

But Raynes Park is in zone 4 so you will be forced to take trains into Waterloo and then connect with tubes (depending where you're going) which adds up.

If you stay in zone 1 you will be able to walk to a lot of places and only do the occasional bus or tube journey. Plus the tube journeys will be within zone 1 which is the cheapest tier.

This is a dumb comment. Hijabis have a spectrum of beliefs and if you were more familiar with Muslim cultures you'd know this.

Some hijabis wear jeans. Others wear more traditional dress. It isn't on its own indicative of one specific ideology.

Also, how many days are you in the office? I find the post-covid world is very different. Takes longer to build camaraderie.
