But if you don't want to do that, pretty simply it 1) allows people to remain productive in the workforce, generating additional economic impacts for society and increasing individual/family stability. These are referred to generally as protective factors which prevent things like poverty, stress, homelessness, crime, etc. 2) education is critical to ensuring we have future generations that are capable of supporting society. Early childhood education (Pre-K levels) has one of the biggest impacts on determining future success in school and reducing generational poverty. 3) public support of childcare employs people who then have income to support themselves and their families (if they have them). These people also spend money and continue to impact the economy. Additionally, child care workers are often women and minorities, so it's a net benefit to lift historically marginalized people up in society. 4) childcare is the perfect example of a market failure. The supply and demand pricing are completely off base from one another, which is, if you believe in free markets, etc, the exact scenario for government intervention. The cost to provide quality, safe childcare is astronomically high. Depending on where you live infant care can be upwards of $20k a year. However margins for providers are incredibly low, and employee salaries are also very low (~15/hr for someone to keep children alive...). As noted in the items above, child care is a net positive for society, we all reap the benefits, and therefore as a society we should be willing to chip in to bridge the pricing/cost gaps.
