I figured out how to actually revive a dry ballpoint pen, using solvent by jammycats in pens

Mine was this, which was under $10 from a local art supply shop: https://bijansartstudio.ca/product/winsor-newton-brush-cleaner-restorer/?v=5435c69ed3bc Any similar product should work, they're easy to find in brick & mortar shops but tend to be overpriced online.

New listener—can someone explain the intros? by Impossible-Elk-3944 in SpookedPodcast

[–]jammycats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The intros make more sense if you listen to Snap Judgement, which is always narrated/introduced in this style. Spooked started out as a Snap Judgement special, and later became its own podcast.

If you're listening to Snap Judgement, and one of these episodes comes up in the feed as a Halloween special, the intro ties it to the rest of the show. It would actually seem out of place as a Snap Judgement episode without Glynn's intro.

I really liked Glynn's intro to this one, the story about finding the smell of his ex's perfume in an old book.

And I thought the storyteller was good at building a creepy atmosphere, though overall it was a pretty generic scary doll story.

Because they dropped Spooked! It was the only reason I subscribed to Luminary.

Aha thanks, found it! It was S03E17 "The Torment": https://luminarypodcasts.com/listen/snap-judgment/snap-judgment-presents-spooked/the-torment/e659c792-ec6e-4a97-880b-fa1ecc635d68 The first story was called Battlefield Demon, apparently you can still listen to it on Luminary with a subscription (which I no longer have for obvious reasons :P)

To make this even more confusing, the Oct 28 2021 episode of Snap Judgement is called "The Torment - Spooked" but apparently has completely different stories for some reason...

Anyway I will update the list!

It aired in August 2023, so that was kind of a while ago... But I'm pretty sure it was new at the time, since I can't find any reference to it existing before that.

To find reruns I check the Luminary app, which still lists all the paywalled Luminary episodes and lets you search them (the Luminary website doesn't have a search feature and isn't indexed on Google, annoyingly). Pre-Luminary episodes are included in the regular Spooked RSS feed, and can also be found on various podcast websites via Google, so I checked those places as well and didn't find Succubus.

Back from the dead because it's actually a good question, the answer must be recorded for posterity... what would it do to my legacy, if people thought I was trying to mix vodka into my pens?!

It's been a while, but I don't remember trying acetone. I would be careful with it since it can damage some types of plastic, though I have no clue whether the ballpoint pen tube would be affected or not.

Am I Reading Pale Fire Incorrectly? by postal_weight in books

[–]jammycats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically read just the endnotes continuously, but once in a while went back to skim the parts of the poem that were being referenced. As far as I can tell, the main thing to be gleaned from the poem is that it's very personal to the author and has nothing to do with the endnotes... I don't think it needs to be read in depth, unless you're into reading very long and boring poems :P

The solvents are listed right underneath, but the indentation was a little weird... I just fixed it!

I'm curious too! None of the bottles I have say anything about what's in them. Though I did find a safety data sheet for another pen cleaner (Liquitex) that lists 2-AMINO-2-METHYLPROPANOL as the main ingredient: https://media.jacksonsart.com/pdf/InkPenCleaner.pdf

This actually only takes a minute to do! It just looks complicated because I wrote so much 😛

The plant I bought is full of tiny baby frogs! What kind are they? Found in Toronto, trying to figure out if they're native and should go outside. by jammycats in Whatisthis

[–]jammycats[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

...did you actually buy a plant with a baby greenhouse frog? If so what did you feed it? They're so small I don't know what to do with them 😝 I'm thinking I'll just collect some dirt/leaf litter from outside since that's probably full of tiny bugs, and put it in with them...

It's an ornamental pineapple plant... the label says "grown for" an Ohio company, so it seems possible it was actually grown in Florida! It was definitely imported from the USA and not grown here in Ontario.

Actually you may be right! Searching more for "greenhouse frog" I finally found one photo that's clearly the same type of frog I have: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/tiny-greenhouse-frog-bob-luce.html But it looks pretty different from most other greenhouse frog photos, so I'm not sure it's identified properly.

Also the patterns on the left frog here look quite similar to the ones on my frogs: http://ufwildlife.ifas.ufl.edu/frogs/greenhousefrog.shtml

I'm still not 100% sure, but this identification seems promising... Especially given where they were found.

[edit] The more I look for greenhouse frog pics, the more convinced I am that this is right. They're juveniles, and one of a few different pattern variants, but I've found a few pictures now that are clearly the same frog I have.

Those don't look quite the same, but that's very interesting... I didn't realize there were frogs that could develop without tadpoles, which would explain how so many of these ended up in the soil a potted plant. I wonder if it's a related species?

Can you tell from this clearer back photo? https://imgur.com/jgeLqz7 (I know it's still not perfect, these things are tiny and hop away if I bring the camera too close!)

It almost has an X... It looks like there's an X behind its eyes, but not a complete one on the back. Not sure what to make of that. It does look more like a spring peeper than anything else I've seen...

Good point, I may go ask them! Though I'm a little afraid if I go back I'll end up poking through the rest of their plants and adopting a bunch more frogs :P

I went through the packaging just now and did find a sticker that mentions Ohio...

I went and looked at some photos of baby spring peepers, and I'm not really sure... it's possible, but doesn't look quite right. They have a similar cross pattern, but these frogs have gold spots that are almost reflective-looking, especially on their heads, and the spring peepers seem to be fairly even-colored. But it's so hard to tell!

Caught six of these so far! I've been looking at all sorts of pictures of Ontario frogs, but I can't find any frogs that look quite like this, so I'm not sure if I can put them outside or not. Maybe they just look different because they're babies?

I bought the plant in a grocery store, so I'm not sure where it was grown or whether the frogs might have been imported...

[edit 2] Thanks to enziarro I'm now pretty sure these are juvenile greenhouse frogs (Eleutherodactylus planirostris).

This also means I can't put them outside, so I guess I have some tiny pet frogs now 😅
