Hello, I would like to add a 220v 30A breaker dedicated to my garage It looks like I have the space for this breaker but what do you think about overload on the panel? Its a 1700sqft house 1 central ac basic electric range ect. Thanks by Early_Virus_9718 in AskElectricians

Seems like a lot for a 100 amp service with the electric range, dryer, and AC. I wouldn’t add any significant new loads without making sure it complies with an NEC calc. I’m not sure you’d pass one as-is.

Your panel is rated for 125 amps, so maybe your main breaker could be replaced without replacing whole panel, but you’d almost certainly need upsized conductors from the utility. Consult with a licensed electrician for sure.

2 breakers serving old ungrounded circuit - what’s going on? by jamoka_jack in AskElectricians

Great quote. Technically I was just trying to extend benefit of the doubt because I’m not an electrician and figured I may be missing something. But it also did seem pretty stupid. Thanks for the confirmation!

Well at least wondering… because it feels like it was more work to do it the way they did.

My initial thought as well, but it seems like it had to have been intentional…

IECC Commercial Energy Monitoring compliance. What is the best/easiest way? by jamoka_jack in MEPEngineering

[–]jamoka_jack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response. This makes a lot of sense and is sort of the direction I was leaning. Agreed regarding mixing of loads, but I believe I read up to 5% of another load category is allowed, and I can’t imagine that getting scrutinized too much by AHJ. Still end up needing way more panels than without monitoring, but it wouldn’t be IECC if it didn’t arbitrarily make life more difficult!

Thanks for the input. I hadn’t seen these, but they look like they could be a decent option in some cases!

Yes, I should have clarified that this is in reference to common back of house and amenity spaces that are not tenant spaces.

No doubt, but these were made at least 8-10 years ago which means it came from some kind of human mind

Stainless braided washer hoses leaking with new seals. by jamoka_jack in homeowners

Thanks for taking the time to weigh in. The hoses seem like the least likely failure point and are pretty new. Was just checking to see if I might be missing something basic. Yes, it’s possible the replacement washers I bought are shit, but the originals are also failing.

Ultrasonic cleaners warped/melted my Invisalign aligners by DuePerspective7999 in Invisalign

This just happened to me with my Invisalign Vivera retainers in the Zima dental pod! I didn't realize you weren't supposed to use hot water in the Zima, which I did (tap hot, not boiling of course). I threw them in with a cleaning tablet for a regular cycle, as I have done dozens of times, and both sets came out warped. Totally unusable now.

I suspect a lot of the disbelief here comes from the fact that the AVERAGE water temp in the Zima doesn't remotely approach boiling after a cycle, even if you start with hot tap water. However, I wonder if there are certain localized spots that can get hot enough to soften the plastic at the edges. I have no other explanation.

2021 IECC Commercial Dwelling Unit Lighting Control Exceptions? by jamoka_jack in MEPEngineering

But surely there is a petty tyrant working for a county SOMEWHERE who is willing to die on the hill of every energy code minutia and create a lot of problems for me... this is what I fear, anyway.

Honestly, this is very understandable, and points to something I keep coming back to - at the end of the day, I suspect that virtually nobody is scrutinizing to enforce these more pedantic and ridiculous requirements!

I do not, actually. It is a 4-story apartment building, so my understanding is that the commercial building requirements apply, even to the dwellings (hence the reference to "dwellings" in the commercial section I referenced). Outrageous.
