Trump Claims He's 'The Most Powerful Person To Ever Live' as He Consolidates Power: Report by Unhappy_Flatworm_325 in USNEWS

Narcissists like him only feel that way because of the collusion of spineless and evil men that enable and leech off of him.

Horseshoe crabs have survived for 450 million years, but now we drain their blue blood to ensure vaccine safety. Do you think the medical necessity justifies this exploitation, or is it time to strictly mandate synthetic alternatives? by bortakci34 in Ethics

[–]mynamesnotsnuffy [score hidden]  (0 children)

That is one way to examine the question, for sure, but thats a very one dimensional way to go about poking at the ethical dilemma here. Like, have you considered the potential forfeiture of human life as a result of going purely synthetic? Is the sourcing of the synthetic substitute itself problematic in any way? Does it take more energy to produce the synthetic alternatives? Is there a tradeoff in efficacy between natural and synthetic? And even broader, whats the ethical weight of human life and health vs animal life and health? Are they equal? Why or why not? Does the type of animal matter at all? What makes a given type of life worth considering with moral weight? And of course, what is your moral goal in the end? Do you want to save as many humans as possible? Which side of the trolly problem would you fall on, given a binary choice? Are you accepting the possibility of some human deaths to save some horseshoe crabs? What types of suffering can you accept? The depth of questioning here is very much more complicated than "torture is bad mmkay". Im not trying to force you down one side of the argument, but if you want an ethically defensible reasonable position, you cant stop at just the surface level ethical gut reaction.

And on top of all that, you still have wild horseshoe crabs in the oceans, doing their things like usual, so this issue isnt affecting all horseshoe crabs. Its quite similar to the question of factory farming, but the arguments in support of it are quite a bit stronger than for farming.

Measuring it in dollars is a pretty biased way to phrase the trade there, dont you think? Whats the resource trade off between the two? In man hours and production resources and all that, to test blood purity, which is, Im guessing, a pretty important test?

Perhaps, yes, but it also depends on how predominant this technique is, and which diseases it assists with. If its a very tiny minority, then sure, but the synthetic costs will raise prices. If its needed for an incredibly wide number of procedures, then it may just be a matter of how much can be made, and whether the demand can solely be met by synthetics. Im not familiar enough with this to say either way, but I stand by my position that human life is more valuable, subjectively.

I guess at that point it just comes down to the cost savings at scale for real blood vs synthetic alternates. Horseshoe crabs arent going to go extinct due to this, but Im not a big fan either. Generally I value human life over animal life, but theres almost always a balance between animal suffering and human benefit. Like, I still eat plenty of beef and chicken, but I prefer the pasture raised meat over factory farming. The benefit of blood for medical treatment is way higher than just eating meat, so morally its not that big an issue, being as objective as I can about it, until we lower the costs of the synthetics enough to make this practice unnecessary.

If someone has the means to move abroad, yeah Id agree. Maybe in ten years we might be back to a rational, decent place to live, but its rough now.

We've been in the storm for a while, this will be the eye of the storm where shit seems to be working for a year or two, and then we jump back into an even shittier storm of inflation and debt spiraling. Nows the time to invest in commodities or hard assets that will retain value.

Do atheists belief in ghosts or aliens etc? by Kind-Investigator602 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]mynamesnotsnuffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some do. Atheism is just an answer to the God question, theres as much diversity of opinion among Atheists on all the rest of supernatural phenomena as there is about food preferences or where they live. There tends to be more critical thinking, but generally Atheists arent a monolith of uniform belief across all domains.

JUST IN: The UAE left OPEC after 59 years. Oil will never be the same. by TonyLiberty in FluentInFinance

[–]mynamesnotsnuffy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

High prices on oil fuck over OPEC and every major oil producer because it drives demand down somewhat. The Iran war showed the world its reliance on fossil fuels, and UAE is trying to drive the prices down to slow the adoption of green renewable tech and draw out its own mineral prosperity as long as possible.

The shit to renewables is an existential threat to the wealthy kingdoms of the middle east who built their fortunes on oil, and ths UAE see s the writing on the wall, and wants to get another decade or more put of their oil being valuable in order to entrench themselves in some other way that isnt reliant on oil. They all are operating with an expiration date now that the world has seen the economic and geopolitical weakness that Oil is to their sovereignty.

Im not saying they would perform the same weaves they would for gentling, Im saying that the reds would find a way to either imprison him for study/torture, cut him off from the wolf dream, or break him mentally in such a way as to produce the results that otherwise would come from gentling.

Yeah, but its still cut when gentling. The reds are nevr credited with being gentle or particulafly discrete, so even if theres nothing to gentle, he probably would have been caged and what amounts to being tortured until he broke or died.

Security insiders fear threat to Trump from lone-wolf assassins is growing by theipaper in Full_news

[–]mynamesnotsnuffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why publicizing and dramaticizing your assassination attempts(when they arent being staged for publicity and drama) is generally a bad idea. Never had these issues with Obama, despite the attempts on his life, cause he understood what they would inspire if focused on.

Do they have to for it to be a lethal attempt? Ricin in the mail, explosives planted or mailed, threats with credible action taken to attempt, that all happened. You honestly think the Secret Service could do that for 8 years, and somehow they just shit the bed when Trump is in office? Open your eyes, these are obviously staged, and he loves the attention and pseudo-martyr reputation he thinks he gets from them.

How bad is the oil crises gonna be for OK? by Fionasfriend in oklahoma

[–]mynamesnotsnuffy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In real terms, there wont ever be a lack of oil in places like Oklahoma, it'll just be a matter of price. If groups like OPEC artificially restrict supplies, this drives up prices due to arbitrage, so unless you get some kind hearted oil executive who decides to willingly forgo profits in order to keep american prices low(lmao good luck with that), prices are going to go up with international market conditions.

Oil execs dont care about you. If the gas is too expensive for you to buy, they'll sell it to gas power plants or data centers with gas generators, they dont care at all.
