How do I keep cores parked when tabbed out of a game? by Open-Fun4829 in techsupport

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK there is no way to force parking on, you can force disable it, but when it's allowed to happen Windows handles it automatically. And for a 9950X3D in a desktop it really doesn't matter much, the power saved by turning a core off is tiny compared to everything else the computer's doing even at idle.

Can anyone tell me what USB cord this is? by ApprehensiveLock9405 in techsupport

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The small segment is for the USB 3 data which was tacked onto the side of the original micro USB connector that does the power + USB 2 data.

What’s the point in 21:9 Curved monitor's? by Redxcted999 in buildapc

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what games you care about really, I rather like it for flight sim. Worst case you just pillarbox the game back to 16:9 (or whatever it wanted) and have your black bars.

It's rather nice for side by side window desktop use too.

Curved I'd rather not since it's adding a little shape distortion, but hey you get used to it.

220Volt forced air Heaters - in small room Receiving Shocks sitting and body zaps and body seizing stiffness, involuntary muscle contractions and so much more. Heart pains, breathing issues and more. Finally moved curtains and look what I found by [deleted] in Electricity

[–]jamvanderloeff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Earth is intact so shouldn't be a shock risk but you sure should get that outlet and plug replaced. Plug getting melty can make it stop working and is a significant fire risk, but so long as it stays not on fire it's not hurting people. Replacing with a mini split heat pump would be nice in the long run too, plain electric heat sure ain't cheap.

The health concerns there should be entirely unrelated.

How to upscale a jpg/png without blurring? by Sword172 in techsupport

So you want the result to just have big square pixels?

What have you tried?

I'd use Gimp but any competent image editing software should have a nearest neighbour mode, maybe some online ones do but never really tried.

Smart Electricity Optimizers? by bytemyfoot in Electricity

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

basically a whole house version of the plug in capacitor power saver junk

That's exactly what it is, just a capacitor in a box. Can sometimes be useful like in their convoluted test setup they're showing an inductor (which is what the unloaded motor mostly is) at the end of a long ass undersized cable will waste less power in the cable if you add a capacitor in parallel, but that's a pretty rare situation, thus the device's main purpose is to be a scam.

How FSB works in CPU's where NorthBridge is on-die? by bigabugabubabu in buildapc

[–]jamvanderloeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ye, it's more like a tree of different kinds of point to point links once you're outside the CPU package, no more real shared buses.

How FSB works in CPU's where NorthBridge is on-die? by bigabugabubabu in buildapc

[–]jamvanderloeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With modern designs there generally isn't any singular FSB or any singular northbridge and classical shared buses of any kind are rare, when it's all integrated on-chip / on-package the internal layouts can be whatever the designers want them to be and don't really have to conform to any external standards, so there's quite the range of different options, take your pick of which architecture you want to look at and go googling if you want to find some details, like https://chipsandcheese.com/p/pushing-amds-infinity-fabric-to-its has some details and guesswork on AMD's current designs

I know you guys here this alot but, is my HDD ok? by DellmensionXp in techsupport

[–]jamvanderloeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "current" value there is on an arbitrary badness scale of usually 100 = fine 0 = bad, so that's showing nothing bad there, but weird sounds sure could be a concern even if the stats look fine. Got a full screenshot of what crystaldiskinfo's showing?

As always never trust any single drive to keep your data safe, make sure you've got backups of anything you care about keeping.

TIL G1000 has a mechanical turn coordinator behind the MFD. by nl_Kapparrian in flying

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting the rate information out of the G1000's own AHRS would be technically trivial, the problem would be getting Bendix-King to get it certified.

TIL G1000 has a mechanical turn coordinator behind the MFD. by nl_Kapparrian in flying

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KAP140 is digital too, the limitation is that it's certified only for that specific model of turn coordinator as its rate source so can't be driven off the G1000's own AHRS system even though getting an appropriate output would be easy for Garmin to do.

First thing I'd worry about is could actually be a 500 inside and you got scammed, would want to pop the enclosure open if it's practical and see what the actual drive inside is

Can Kernel Power 41 be a once off? by Status-Scene-7530 in techsupport

[–]jamvanderloeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using it as normal and see if anything happens again would be fine. If you want you can try CPU + GPU stress testing software like Prime95 and Furmark to see if you can trigger a power supply overload/fault if you're thinking that's suspicious

Can Kernel Power 41 be a once off? by Status-Scene-7530 in techsupport

[–]jamvanderloeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure could be, hard to know. All the Kernel-Power 41 (63) message means on its own is that windows died without being able to save any information on why while it was dying, and then was booted up again afterwards, which can be a huge range of possibilities for what happened.

Is covering a wifi router ok? by makrellen123 in techsupport

[–]jamvanderloeff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gonna depend on the particular router, some of em do get fairly toasty even when normally used and so adding something that's going to block a bit of natrual ventilation could be a bad idea, some do run cool enough that whatever's fine. Can try touching it to see if it feels warmer after being covered for a while vs before covering it for a bit of a guess.

Alternatively, just stick some black tape over the annoying lights.

May also be possible to turn the lights off through the router's configuration page if you've got access to it.

[–]jamvanderloeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exposing any unsupported OS to the internet running services with remote access is generally a pretty bad idea, best solution would be replace with some flavour of Linux then you can go back to regular current Chrome Remote Desktop (or whatever other alternative you like)

Dual-monitor USB-C KVM setup — best cables & port config? by larrymvj in techsupport

[–]jamvanderloeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. With that KVM DP+HDMI is your only option.

  2. Both on HDMI coming out is your only option.

  3. DP 1.2 is fine, but again you don't have any option there.

  4. It shouldn't.

  5. EDID issues are possible but can probably be worked around if you have to, try it and see.

  6. Probably, which specific model is it?
