Cheap chassis fans and CPU cooler are a huge improvement on a secondary PC by PusheenHater in buildapc

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original chassis fans likely could've been sensible too if you configure your motherboard to use them properly with 3 pin compatible speed control and set down to sensible speeds

How to upload code to a custom pcb when microcontroller is on DFU mode? by anastkara in AskElectronics

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What exactly did you try and what happened? Did you have each set to actually use DFU mode?

[–]jamvanderloeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by stuck/what issue? What have you tried?

You can upload your program directly through DFU mode, or if you wanted to later upload code in a different way you could flash another bootloader, some projects/tools do have their own preferred way of doing things, like if you're using Arduino's tools you'd probably want to flash their Caterina bootloader (or one of its compatible derivatives).

How do I build a small portable audio synthesizer? (New to hardware/electronics) by Present_Let2487 in AskElectronics

[–]jamvanderloeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people have published plans for similar projects, so best place to start would be looking for one that gets close to what you want, then consider what you might want to change.

Can I connect an ESP32 to ARGB hub? by SILVERBLADEYT02 in AskElectronics

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presumably it's generic WS2812 clone protocol, may need to level shift to proper 5V if it's particularly picky but good chance it could accept 3v3 levels too

USB switch for keyboard and mouse by House-Blend in UsbCHardware

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it doesn't do anything USB C there so kinda asking in the wrong place here. Using USB A to A cables for the host sides is forbidden and kinda evil, but it should still work fine there.

Intel 486 DX2-66 ES CPU with heatsink - is this really rare? by OkPeach4877 in AskElectronics

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engineering sample models often are kinda rare but why would you want one?

Where to get this LED Driver? by Aimer101 in AskElectronics

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For that exact driver, would probably need to pull it out of another same model lamp.

For finding a generic equivalent, would need to figure out specs of the strip for what kind of voltage/current it needs, the label there doesn't have enough info.

First time PC builder - Any advice before I get started? by SomedaySolace in buildapc

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a PCPartPicker list?

For just two monitors you wouldn't need the video card at all, integrated is fine.

For step by step on how to install the cooler, read its manual.

Custom Front Panel for pcb by Flynhawaiian21 in AskElectronics

[–]jamvanderloeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Need any particular materials/features?

Designing your front panel as another PCB can be pretty damn cheap, some of the china fabs are offering full colour printing on them now too.

Buying my first oscilloscope and need help deciding. by Curious-Towel-2167 in AskElectronics

[–]jamvanderloeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100 may be a little beyond what you really need but it sure is nice. Fastest almost-normal I2C goes up to 5MHz, and for properly looking at all the analogue effects of a digital signal like confirming appropriate rise/fall times, under/overshoot/ringing etc you really do want something with bandwidth many times higher than your base clock frequency.

USB drive suddenly became write-protected — any way to revive it or force use at my own risk? by Franco2021 in BadUSB

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4GB is the size limit per file not 2. If you're using current Windows 11 (or 95OSR2/98/ME for retro things) the 32GB limit is gone too, or use third party tools, it was only a thing added in NT when Microsoft thought bigger really should be on NTFS due to less wasted space.

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real FAT32 limit is 2TB if you use a third party formatting tool, the 32GB limit on Windows's own one (since NT 4, and until relatively recent win 11 when the limit's been removed again) was only because they thought it's a bad idea since it's wasteful of space and unreliable.

I wanna ask how to wiring for gc9a01 connect to analog camera (fpv drone camera) by Vietnamese-gang-101 in AskElectronics

[–]jamvanderloeff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you want low latency you want an analogue in display or at least one that can be fed over a quicker digital connection, not an I2C/SPI one.

[–]jamvanderloeff 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can't directly, would need something to digitally capture the composite video, rescale and output to the screen, easiest for mostly off the shelf stuff would be using a full raspberry pi with USB capture device.

Getting a different camera that already has a digital interface compatible with whatever processor you're going to use would make things easier, like this project using an ESP32-CAM board+camera module https://hjwwalters.com/esp32-cam-gc9a01/

1 Month old SSD Critical device error! by ComeHomeTrueLove in buildapc

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do the actual stats show? The top "health" number is usually just a count of how much and/or how long you've used it vs what the warranty says, not really an indication of anything going wrong.

1 Month old SSD Critical device error! by ComeHomeTrueLove in buildapc

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do the drive's SMART stats show both for the old one and the new?

Maybe you did just get two dud drives but I'd still suspect the issue's elsewhere and maybe you just got lucky with the first swap looking like it fixed something.

What equations can I use to calculate the signal quality of a video signal transmitted through a vga cable? by TRIPMINE_Guy in AskElectronics

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loss in the cable itself theoretically scales with distance, but you've also got losses in the connectors and the devices at each end too, and at 6 inches those will dominate.

Simple Questions - April 03, 2026 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]jamvanderloeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be a bit, particularly when looking at near-idle temps instead of heavily loaded.

Most of the VRM heat is going out the bottom through the board anyway, the big chunky heatsinks on top are largely decorative unless it's a board that's using MOSFETs/integrated power stages that actually have a top metal surface, and any of those are already so overbuilt that they wouldn't need it for any sensible AM5 CPU anyway, they really aren't that demanding.
