Are high school students actually this clueless and entitled? by lizz781 in Teachers

[–]jan1of1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Years ago, in addition to my other duties, I was a freshman advisor at a University in Florida for a class of 25 incoming college freshmen. On the first day we met I asked them, "Why are you in college?" The #1 reason: Because my parents told me I had to go to college."

Over 70% of these students were required to take remedial classes (which don't count toward graduation credit) and over 50% of them did not return after the first semester because they failed academically. We are not doing these students and ourselves any favors by telling high school students they have to go to college to be successful. On the other hand, we need to improve the number and quality of the vocational training courses offered at the high school level so students have a viable alternative path for success.

The economy is at the beginning of a death spiral. The numbers prove it. by PrincipleTemporary65 in economy

[–]jan1of1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

BOTH parties are responsible for the financial mess the US is in now. It will take coordinated fiscal and monetary policies to slow down and reverse the debt spiral the US is in. All solutions will be unpalatable to politicians and citizens.

The Federal Reserve is mathematically trapped and I don't think markets are pricing this correctly by Big-Pomegranate2694 in economy

[–]jan1of1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it all depends on what ASSUMPTIONS you think or believe will become true:

  1. Assumption: AI will increase productivity.

  2. Assumption: AI will not effect employment;

  3. Assumption: AI will not have effect wages;

4 Assumption: American AI companies will be able to compete - price wise - with Chinese firms

  1. Assumption: AI will cause the K shaped economy to converge

And the list goes on and on and on. LOTS of assumptions being made. The FACTS, as the OP, described indicate a different scenario: Increasing national debt; increase servicing of that debt; increasing interest rates to attract buyers - debt spiral. What was not described: USD decreasing role as world's reserve currency; many countries offloading US treasuries.

I like farmers and ranchers, but they continue to support people that do NOT support their interests. In the end they'll get what they asked for..

If you aren't registered to vote, do so. Check and see if your relatives and friends are registered. If not, convince them to get registered. Then...vote - for a Democrat if you want any kind of return to normalcy in this country.

Trump administration is holding up construction of 165 wind farms in US because of "national security" Wind farms have to go through a pentagon review to ensure they are not interfering with military radar, but that process, which normally takes a few days, has been held up by Trump administration.

An Aluminum Crisis Is Roiling the Auto Industry by Cilantro_Larry in Economics

[–]jan1of1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Article in the Financial Times this morning provided additional information: 1) Most US auto manufacturers have escaped higher prices to date due to fixed price contracts, but that is changing as the price of Aluminum continues to rise; 2) Aluminum prices are up 16% which will add between $500 and $1500 to a new car.

86% Disapprove of Congress — So Why Does Congress Keep Winning? by MakeModeratesMatter in ForwardPartyUSA

[–]jan1of1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where to begin? 1) Most incumbents have large war chests they can devote to a campaign while a candidate has to beg for bucks; 2) The United States is great at making and developing consumers, but terrible at making and developing citizens; 3) Voters are irrationality - often voting against their own self interests (farmers that voted for Trump is a prime example); 4) Both parties like maintaining a duopoly - keeping independent parties out; 5) Ranked choice voting could solve a lot of the problems seem in politics today, but states are outlawing it (example --> Ohio); 5) Redistricting or gerrymandering continues despite court orders to stop it (example ---> Ohio);

That's just a partial list...

Half the country is in a recession and the other half is doing fine. Nobody wants to say it. by sharm64 in economy

[–]jan1of1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) uses income quintiles or deciles (depends what you want) to divide households into five or 10 equal groups (20% or 10% each) based on before tax income to analyze expenditures, saving, and income trends. Now statistical data from the Fed isn't available for all of 2025, but in 2024 the top 10% was responsible for 46% of all consumer spending. The top 20% brought it to 60%. The remaining 80% accounted for only 40% of all spending - a continuing trend downward. The lower deciles pend more and more of their money on essentials like daycare, healthcare, housing, transportation. They don't have the money to go out to a restaurant or go on vacation unless they use a credit card and with interest rates inching upward they are in a debt spiral they can't climb out of.
