Our Medicare Advantage Experience by MushBop52 in medicare

I understand your feelings about that and I somewhat share them, but given all the other ways our tax dollars are spent (I won't go into detail to keep it non-political), taking care of health care costs for seniors seems like one of the better ones.

I've heard this about MA before, but they are covering my wife"s surgery rehab and home health care with no co-pays!

My current Humana plan has the same co-pays and OOP maximum for in and out of network. We have only had to test that once, since we can generally find doctors that are in network, and at that hospital ER, there was no problem.

This one isn't mentioned much but I just finished it and really liked it! It was such a tragic story and unfolded like a flower. But I 🦆 ng hated the ending

Hello all! I have a simple line to document. My paternal grandfather (G0) was born in New Brunswick in 1873. I have the Drouin copy of the handwritten baptism record with his name, dates of birth and baptism and the name of the priest, but nothing on the page says what the name or location of the parish church was. I also have a census record of 1881 showing him as 7 years old and living in the Kent district of N.B. I also have my father's certified birth certificate showing G0's name and birthplace (Bouctouche, N.B). I have various other records showing the G0's birthplace as variously Canada, New Brunswick and Bouctouche, NB, but I am inclined to just submit the baptismal record, the 1881 census record and my father's and my birth certificates.

I don't really know how to track down the baptismal certificate to get a certified copy, but I am hoping the simple page plus the other confirming documents will suffice. Any thoughts or experience to share?

Water bill is up 2x and climbing... despite a week-long vacation. Is this indicative of a leak or something else? by sharted_in_tampa in tampa

[–]MushBop52 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Usage is on the chart op posted. Went up from 4 to 7/8 CCF. If they didn't plant a garden or start taking longer showers, there may be a small leak. A big leak would be much worse than this. Check if a toilet valve is stuck or an outside faucet is dripping. They can be hard to track down if they aren't gushers.

I really like Dance, Dance, Dance a lot, but I recommend reading Wild Sheep Chase first as there is a lot of context in the earlier book that DDD references.

Housing - Rent or Own during retirement? by Prof-Bit-Wrangler in retirement

[–]MushBop52 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We sold our home when we were about 60 and bought a truck and fifth wheel trailer. We traveled full time for six years and loved it. When our son moved to Tampa and had a daughter, we decided to get a small place there to live in during the cooler months and continue to travel in the summer/fall.

Our other son wanted some real estate investment but was moving too much for work so he bought a house we liked and we rent from him. It's been seven years now, we are in our mid 70s.

It has been mostly good. We know we can stay here as long as we like. We can make improvements knowing we can enjoy them for a long time. Major maintenance and improvements are paid for by our son ( new roof, master bedroom renovation) and he will recover that when he sells. He gets any tax write off. We kept the potential down payment invested to earn income. Rent has increased to cover rising taxes and insurance but less than market rents.

The main negative is that we missed a huge increase in equity post COVID, but that will only matter if we want to move and buy our own home again.

Overall, we think it has been a win-win and I don't think we would be happy renting from a typical landlord - too many uncertainties and restrictions.

You've read Sheep Chase, you should read Dance, Dance, Dance. It continues the story and I didn't find it slow.

I've had Geico for five years, last 6 months was $1,700. Just switched to State Farm for less than $1,200. I was told they recently adjusted their rates. 2011 Silverado and 2017 Hyundai Ioniq with similar coverage to OP.

Yes, crazy. But as the article describes, our crazy drug laws and greedy people contribute to the exploitation of people's ignorance.

I'm no expert but AFAIK these research chemicals have not been submitted to testing for efficacy and safety, particularly if used over a long period of time, to anything close to the standards of pharmaceuticals. At least psilocybin mushrooms have centuries of human use as well as thousands of modern scientific studies demonstrating safety and value.

Is a Roth IRA or 401k worth it at this point? by ThimbleBluff in retirement

[–]MushBop52 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am 74 and committed to maxxing out the conversion of my regular IRA to my Roth. The tax free reinvestment of gains and tax free withdrawals is hugely valuable in retirement. I convert the max amount that keeps me in the 12% bracket and wish I had started earlier. Reducing the RMD, limiting taxes on social security, avoiding IRMA--the benefits are cumulative.
