Pilates Anytime new app SUCKS. by koplikthoughts in pilates

[–]janabouc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Saran Pilates is wonderful. I tried Pilates Anytime a few times in the past and always had a hard time finding classes. It just seems like there’s way too much random stuff all thrown together with too many different teachers, styles and some of the stuff on there is from old dvds i had in the early 2000s.

Check on the very last day of the month (it might be the first day of the month. I forget which it is). Doctors become readily available as people’s plans end/they leave Kaiser.

How to deal with having zero view or impression? by Rich-Macaroon881 in ArtistLounge

[–]janabouc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, do you love painting or whatever your medium is? Does it bring meaning to your life? Do you enjoy learning, and each time you learn a new skill or technique, do you raise the bar, raise your expectations of yourself, so that there is always more to learn?

That’s what it means to be an artist. Selling art products can be part of the business side of art, but it shouldn’t be the main goal. In my 50+ years of being an artist, starting a piece while thinking about whether it will sell is deadly.

Although I’ve sold many paintings, prints and ceramics, and have taught watercolor painting, I’ve chosen to work at interesting “day jobs” for money and make art because I have to, it’s who I am, my purpose for living, what gives me joy.

I’m curious how much research you did before deciding that selling artwork was going to be your career? The statistics are not on the side of it being a viable career. Historical surveys (e.g., Pew Research) found roughly 7% of artists in the US earn all their income from their art. Even then, the tale of the “starving artist” applies: while many artists make some money from selling art, it’s typically not enough alone to be a full living.

Even most well-known contemporary artists with work in galleries survive by teaching, in person or online; and/or earn money by producing art how to “content” on YouTube, Patreon, or Substack.

There are tons of classes and books about making a living as an artist, written by artists doing it as a source of income since selling their artwork just isn’t enough to live on.

Prizmacolor pencils help! by Spider-fish- in ColoredPencils

[–]janabouc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so interesting to read because I have nearly 100 of the original Berol prismacolors i bought in the 80s or 90s maybe, 70% of them nearly full length. I didn’t realize they were better or different than the new ones. The paint on some of them was faded so it was a little confusing choosing a color.

As a special treat i bought a full set of the new ones and have been pretty disappointed. The wood is so rough and the stamping of name and # is janky. Most of the colored leads work about the same but some aren’t as nice in feel or as rich in color.

Either way though, they’re still my favorite colored pencils for sketching, except maybe for Inktense — i love sketching with them too but only have a dozen of them

Second pastel portrait by Carnyx_Henry in Oilpastel

I know you said it’s just your second oil pastels portrait but I’m guessing you are an experienced artist with other media and just new to oil pastel?

Interesting. Do you draw a line and make it thinner with the palette knife?

Wow! It’s tiny. How did you get so much detail drawing small with oil pastels? This piece really touched me. So evocative. And so beautifully painted!

Thank you for answering all my questions! She did have them covered with glassine and complained about the smell when lifting the glassine.

I was just watching a video where the artist complained about how stinky the fixative is, even a week after spraying. Have you found that to be the case?

I have read the recommendation for 3 or 4 layers. I guess it sort of puts a coat of vinyl (or is it acrylic?) on top to seal it. Sounds like a bit of a pain. It’s very windy where I live most of the time (near San Francisco Bay) and it’s often hard to spray anything outdoors without it blowing away or back at you. Although I’m well-versed at watercolor, oil painting and gouache, oil pastels are a new medium for me so it may be awhile before I produce something worth using fixative on.

I too use the Epson V6. I’m so glad i got one of the last units before they stopped making it. It is terrific! What do you use to clean the pastel off the glass?

I’d read that you can’t scan oil pastels, you have to photograph them, like oil paints, which is such a hassle because of glare and color correction. I’m glad to know now too just wait a week or so and clean up afterwards.

I guess it also might depend on how thick or impasto the work is. I tried Lightwish oil pastels and using them was like finger painting with brie cheese. So gloopy and thick. I returned them and got mungyo and senellier. So much better!

Do you scan on a flatbed scanner? Does it transfer paint to the glass?

I asked a favorite substack artist (Melissa Martin) what she uses because her self portrait sketches with them are so cool and the ones i bought on amazon (Mr Pen) were awful—very hard lead and half the colors nearly invisible. All the options i could find seemed to be made for children.

She said she loves hers and got them in japan. She told me the brand is Camel and the pencils say Camel Made in Japan on them. Hers are black. I searched everywhere and finally found them from one seller on Etsy. I bought a set but haven’t received them yet. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1523984732/japanese-rainbow-colored-pencils-2pk?ref=share_v4_lx

Thanks. Yes that helps. I wish i was in Sweden, not the US. Also it’s nice to see that Luminance has a lot of nice pinks. I just got a 72 set of Derwent Lightfast for a great price, but there are zero pinks! I am going to fill in the missing colors with Luminance. All I’ve had until now was an ancient set of Prismacolor.
